According to British institute of Facilities Management (BIFM), “Facilities management is the integration of processes within an organization to maintain and develop the agreed services which support and improve the effectiveness of its primary activities”. And, for the success of any organization, effective facilities management, combining resources and activities is vital. (BIFM, n.d.) .
The three core components of facility management include but are not limited to: Leadership and Strategy, quality of care through education and training, and technology. Building an environment where all these components can come together and bring value to organizations is essential and it can’t be achieved without the facility manager’s role including the skills set, knowledge and abilities required to effectively perform their work (IFSM, n.d.). Tactical planning for scheduling and accomplishing daily tasks that support operation of a facility is essential task. In addition, advancement in technology for better patient care and the increase array of conditions of disease and injury resulted the need for educating and training to expand the knowledge base and performance skills required for all health care staff in order for them to practice up to date, high quality, error free, and safe patient care (Hospitals, n.d.).

Three important components of facility management in the healthcare field are strategic planning, education, and quality technology. According to the International Facility Management Association, “Facility management is a profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, process and technology” (“What,” n.d.). In the health care field there are many different departments and services that contribute to the organization (“Hospitals,” n.d.). Like other business organizations, the health care field operates with a ladder of employees with different levels of authority and responsibility (“Hospitals,” n.d.). When compared to other business fields, one difference is that health care organizations exist to promote the health and well being of all humans. It is important to maintain certain standards that allow for this to occur.
Strategic planning is a big component because without a plan in place, it is difficult to reach the end goal and chaos in the work place can ensue. An example of this could be in the event of a disaster, where the hospital loses power. Having a plan will allow for the essential technology to continue operating. Planning allows for the facility to run smoothly and for every employee to be on the same page. It will also save the organization money because by having a direct plan, you can avoid unnecessary steps. Another core part of facility management is education. Proper education at all levels and for all professions is essential for reaching company goals. Educating employees on the proper steps to take in situations allows for stability. Additionally, in the healthcare field, every employee needs to have knowledge of how to protect patient information. An additional key component is quality technology. Up to date systems need to be in place, as well as access to the most recent data. This is essential because in the event of an emergency, information can be easily pulled in order to prevent further crisis. This includes all levels and all professions in the healthcare field. Outdated data and technology can lead to errors and avoidable situations. As mentioned previously, there are many different careers in a health care organization, and these three core components are essential for any profession in the healthcare field.
