A neurological disorder is a condition that is often caused by a dysfunction in a given part of the nervous system, resulting in physical or psychosomatic symptoms. According to scientists, types of neurological disorders that occur during development include epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, brain tumor, developmental delay, severe headaches and movement disorders.

This research elaborates widely on epilepsy and movement disorders as neurological disorders and their effect on the human development. Epilepsy, which is considered a major neurological disorder, is said to be a chronic disorder characterized by recurring and unprovoked seizures. Epilepsy is becoming a common problem found among children. In a recent report, of the millions of reported epilepsy cases worldwide, 20% of them involve youngsters (Sharma, 2013). Seizures cause a disturbance in the brain functionality and can cause motor, sensual and autonomic dysfunction. Common symptoms of epilepsy include temporary confusion, overwhelming jerking movements of the arms and feet, consciousness loss, and psychological symptoms (Sharma, 2013).

Among the global cases of epilepsy recorded 50% of their causes have been traced to head traumas, brain conditions, genetic influences, infectious diseases, prenatal damages, and growing disorders such as autism (Sharma, 2013). Because children are sensitive to brain damages during the prenatal periods, a contagion by the mother, oxygen deficiencies and poor nutrition may contribute to many brain damage among children resulting in epilepsy or cerebral palsy in children. Treatment of epilepsy involves an all-inclusive plan involving both physicians and parents. Parental involvement in treating their children is very vital as they spend more time with their kids. Responsible parents should understand the epilepsy disorder in their child and develop strategies on how to recognize signs of seizures. Also, parents should encourage other individuals to treat these kids as healthy children and provide necessary attention to activities such as swimming or cycling.

Another neurological disorder is the Movement disorders. Movement disorders are often associated with underlying nervous and psychological disorders (Faust & Soman, 2011). In a recent report, movement disorders are characterized by an abnormality of muscle or motor control and an increased or declined control of spontaneous movements. When individuals demonstrate a sluggishness of their voluntary movement such as swinging arms while walking, they are considered to possess symptoms of a hypokinetic disorder (Faust & Soman, 2011). There are numerous causes of movement disorders in humans. They include autoimmune diseases, diverse nerve diseases, severe injuries, blood infections, genetics, and various medications. To date, there are many different ways of issuing treatment to these patients. The most essential methods include multidisciplinary approach including psychiatry, neurology and social psychology (Faust & Soman, 2011). Including of parents in every stage of treatment is important as it guarantees a long-lasting continuity of the treatment and produces better health results for the patients.

To date, most persons have researched the effects of spirituality on neurobiology. From these researches, most studies have proven that there is a positive relationship to improved health, decreased anxiety and depression associated with meditation and prayer. In the recent past, physiologists believe that practicing prayer and meditation could bring about a significant change in the brain structure and the production of numerous neurotransmitters.

Thank you for sharing insights in the neurological condition of cerebral palsy. It is very apparent that this condition can impact the development of a human being from diagnosis through every stage of his or her life. One area of the condition that was discussed in your post was life expectancy.  Life expectancy has been determined by current research as improved between the years 1983 and 2010, however this research shows that for those with cerebral palsy and being tube fed, their life expectancy is shorter than that of adolescents and adults without said health impairment (Brooks, Strauss, Shavelle, Tran, Rosenbloom, & Wu, 2014). With this said, the scriptures state that the tongue can bring life or death (Proverbs 18:21). Would it then be reasonable to deduce that spiritual meditation can impact cerebral palsy by confession of healing? There has been evidence of healing of the “palsy” in the Bible and this person’s life expectancy became normal (Mark 2:1-12).  Has the scripture the same power as times past, or is it that there is less of an emphasis on scriptural realities versus medical or natural scientific reasoning? It seems like faith has a great deal of impact on the outcome of one’s life whether they have been diagnosed with a condition or not, but what are some reasons that perhaps scriptural integration is not taking place into the life of Believers? Is it that there is an emphasis on “spirituality” without the Word of God, or is it something else? I would love to hear from the class on this.  Please remember that the discussions in this course ask for scriptural integration of at least two scriptures in the main post. For this week, please share what research suggests about the effects of spiritual disciplines (prayer, meditation) on neurobiology for full credit.
