MBA 5861, New Product Marketing

Course Description

Exploration of several new product subject areas including marketing, branding, creative design, and management issues related to new product marketing. Designed for students interested in brand management and positioning in the context of both small entrepreneurial firms and large corporations. Explores the challenges faced by marketers, business managers, and consultants in bringing a new technology to the market.

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 2. Describe the management challenges associated with introducing a new product to market,

including developing a brand strategy. 3. Develop strategic goals based on the strategic platform decisions and target market selection. 4. Explain the importance of the creative element with respect to developing innovative products

and their respective marketing programs. 5. Assess the value of branding within the context of new product development and

management. 6. Explain the impact of positioning and brand equity on new product development. 7. Evaluate methods of measuring and interpreting brand performance. 8. Examine the role of brand extensions in the management of new product introductions. 9. Discuss the management of new product brands to include management over a period of time

and overcoming geographic boundaries.

Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn 3 hours of college credit.

Course Structure

1. Unit Learning Outcomes: Each unit contains Learning Outcomes that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit.

2. Unit Lesson: Each unit contains a Unit Lesson, which discusses unit material. 3. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters

from the textbook. Suggested Readings are listed in the unit study guides to aid students in their course of study. The readings themselves may or may not be provided in the course, but students are encouraged to read the resources listed if the opportunity arises as they have valuable information that expands upon the lesson material. Students will not be tested on their knowledge of the Suggested Readings.

4. Discussion Boards: Discussion Boards are a part of all CSU term courses. Information and specifications regarding these assignments are provided in the Student Resources listed in the Course Menu bar.

5. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in Units I- VIII. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below.

Unit Assignments Unit I Essay Using the CSU Online Library, research your favorite brand with respect to its effectiveness in new product marketing. Use the most current Interbrand rating of brands as a reference (see Figure 1-5 of your course textbook).

1. Describe the target market that your brand is hoping to reach. What is the positioning strategy of this particular brand?

2. Examine the brand's overall effectiveness in reaching its target market with both new products and existing products.

3. Identify the challenges and opportunities associated with this brand. 4. Recommend strategies that this particular brand should take in the next 10 years in order to

maintain and/or increase their effectiveness. Your APA-formatted response should be a minimum of two double-spaced pages (not including the title and references pages). 1. The Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Summer Olympics were discussed within the case with respect to their use of marketing—specifically, corporate sponsorships. Research any of the other Olympic years (winter or summer), discussing their use of corporate sponsorships.

2. What additional branding and marketing tools/themes were used in the Olympic games you researched in Question #1.

3. The Olympics reach worldwide. Do you believe that corporate sponsorships are transcending geographic boundaries, effectively reaching the international target audience?
