Poetry
Poetry is the stylistic use of words to express a message or as theme of a particular context. It should appeal to the emotions of the readers because regardless of the style of writing, it attempts to familiarize life’s happenings. It is therefore the use of semantics in the oral or literary context and the language differs from ordinary prose. A poet emphasizes the linguistic form of his or her piece rather than the language in order to achieve uniqueness. While still remaining logical, poetry conveys messages in a condensed and a less expansive manner.
The most important component of sound in poetry is rhythm. The rhythmic style in each line arrangement is of a particular meter and words are used according to the desire of the poet. However, there is freedom in poetry writing and as long as there is a unique feature rhythm can be slightly distorted. Different types of rhythmic styles played great roles in Early European, Eastern, Classical and Modern poetry .Poetry is the platform for powerful feelings that are not always communicated on a daily basis. It brings commonality to uncommon situations.
As an art form it uses words that express ideas of the poet to focus reader’s attention on the agenda or subject matter. It is smart and it is both and entertaining and intellectual tool in literature. It is structured to rationalize emotions and engage the thought process of the reader accordingly. Poetry broadens the linguistic capabilities of the reader or listener by widen the vocabulary, but most importantly, the way he or she thinks. Poetry enables the reader to decipher the meaning of complicated puzzles and passages by taking him or her out of the intellectual comfort zone.
In addition to having the capabilities to engage emotion and broaden both the linguistic and intellectual capabilities of the reader or listener, poetry is expected to characterize human nature and give meaning to our existence as humans. In George Oppen’sThe Building of the Skyscraper, which is a perspective poem, Oppen gives a comprehensive summary of the conditions that appeared to be existential in the twentieth century. One can farmiliarize himself or herself with civilization characteristics in the technologic world as the accelerated changes occur. We learn to isolate certain environmental factors and appreciate their existence with regard to the changes that take place (Openn). Openn expresses the importance of appreciating change through his comparison with the tree growing on a sidewalk to create a new environment in the streets.
Oppen emphasizes on crucial recognitions and reviews the collective situations of different tribes and cultures. Therefore, the instrumental poem offers the readers a clear point of view, a sense of belonging and a platform on which they might comprehend their feelings relative to the circumstances that surround them. The reader feels understood regardless of the absence of the writer. The receptive reader might feel the gratitude of a client in a doctor’s office, upon hearing that his condition has a name. The speaker acknowledges the importance usefulness of our coping strategies in a diverse environment that is constantly changing. There are many perceptions that one can have but managing each according to usefulness, priority and relevance can help in coping. According to Openn, the poet also has a responsibility to be precise with language for the better understanding of the reader.
