Example 1: ABC Classification System
1. Select the Example 1 worksheet
2. You may delete and re-enter the usage and unit cost data for the 12 items if you want. Note that
although the 12 items for his example are in order according to dollar value, this is not necessary,
the items can be entered in any order.
3. Delete the values for A and B.
4. Initialize A and B by clicking the spinner button for A up two times and the spinner button for B
up one time, you should have A = 42,000 and B=18,000.
5. Scroll down so you can observe all 12 items in the table as you change the values of A and B.
A and B are the lower limits for the A and B classifications and as you click a spinner button the
value for A or B will change to the next higher (or lower) dollar value in the table. At the same time
all the items are classified according to the current values for A and B.
6. Now scroll back up so you can watch the graph and the table at the top of the template and
adjust the values of A and B to get the desired characteristics for each class, i.e. high value,
low volume in classification A and low value, high volume in classification C.
Example 18: Single Period Model
1. Select the Example 18 worksheet
2. Select Poisson for the demand distribution.
3. Enter data: Cs = 3, Ce = 2, and average demand = 4 (all given).
4. Note that optimal service level = .60.
5. Set actual stocking level = 0 and note that the service level is computed (according to the
Poisson distribution) to be .0183, i.e. 18% of the time there will be a demand of zero.
6. Increment the actual stocking level to 1 and note that the probability of demand <= 1 is .0916.
7. Point out in the graph that the blue bar (expected shortage cost) is high when the actual stocking
level is low and decreases with increasing actual stocking level (because the probability of a
shortage goes down). The optimal actual stocking level will occur when the blue and red
bars are balanced, i.e. you balance the expected shortage cost with the expected excess cost.
7. Finally, solve for the optimal actual stocking level - increase the actual stocking level until the
resulting service level just exceeds .60 - and at the same time red and blue bars in the graph
will come the closest to balancing. This will happen at actual stocking level = 4.
