The Scholarly Crawl Activity

Instructions

1) Make a table like in the example on the next page.

2) Go to a bar that serves distilled spirits. You can also make the drinks at home if you desire.

3) Order a drink containing distilled spirits. The drink cannot be a straight distilled spirit. It must be a mixed drink.

4) Take a picture of the drink. Include a sheet of paper with your name on it in the photo

5) Gather the following pieces of information about the drink:

a. The name of the drink

b. The constituents of the drink, the ABVs of each constituent, and the ratios that the constituents are used in (i.e. the types and ratio of mixers in your drink)

c. The total % alcohol (in ABV) in your drink. You can find a representative ABV of your drink by searching for the drink at http://www.drinksmixer.com/. If your drink is not on the list, you will have to calculate a dilution. You can do this by using the formula below:

Total ABV = [(ABV of mixer #1 x volume of mixer#1) + (ABV of mixer #2 x volume of mixer#2)…] / total volume

Example#1: If I have a drink with 1 oz. of Bailey’s Irish cream (17% ABV), 0.5 oz. of Captain Morgan spiced rum (50% ABV), and 0.5 oz. of Rumple Minze peppermint liqueur (50% ABV), what would be the total ABV of the mixed drink?

Total ABV = [(17 x 1) + (50 x 0.5) + (50 x 0.5)] / 2

Total ABV = 67 / 2

Total ABV = 33.5%

Many cocktails have non-alcoholic mixers. If that’s the case, Examples #2 and #3 may be useful.

Example #2: If I have a drink with 6 oz. of orange juice (does not contain alcohol) and 1 oz. of vodka (40% ABV), what would be the total ABV of the drink?

Total ABV = [(0 x 6) + (40 x 1)] / 7

Total ABV = 40 / 7

Total ABV = 5.7%

Example #3: If I have a drink with 0.5 oz. gin (40% ABV), 0.5 oz. white rum (40% ABV), 0.5 oz. vodka (40% ABV), 0.5 oz. peach schnapps (23% ABV), 0.5 oz. Blue Curacao liqueur (30% ABV), 0.5 oz. triple sec (30% ABV), and 8 oz. of Red Bull (does not contain alcohol), what would be the total ABV of the drink?

Total ABV = [(40 x 0.5) + (40 X 0.5) + (40 X 0.5) + (23 X 0.5) + (30 X 0.5) + (30 X 0.5) + (0 X 8)] / 11

Total ABV = 101.5 / 11

Total ABV = 9.2% ABV

6) Taste the drink. Briefly describe how the drink tastes.

7) Did you enjoy the drink? Express your personal thoughts in a few sentences.

8) Repeat steps 1-7 with 2 different drinks. You should have 3 drinks.

On the next page is an example of an information table for a drink and how you should fill it out. When you are done, save your 3 forms and photos. After that, mail the document to me via the course Dropbox.

Drink #1

Name

Mind Eraser

Constituents, ABV, and ratio

3 oz.Vodka (40% ABV): 3 oz. Kahlua (20 % ABV): 3 oz. tonic water (0% ABV)

3:3:3

Total ABV

22%

Taste

This drink is consumed, from bottom to top, with a straw very quickly. The acrid coffee flavors of the Kahlua were soon replaced by the solvent burn of the vodka. The vodka flavors were then washed out by the tingly effervescence of the tonic water

Impression

I thought it was okay, but I don’t think it’s a drink that one can sit and enjoy at leisure. I enjoyed that it was a layered cocktail that you can drink with a straw. I really think that the purpose of this drink is to get someone drunk quickly. It is called “Mind Eraser”, after all.
