A transition between worthless and wanted; the story of women in war: MULAN II

How could a Disney movie be important in the real world?

In some countries women are still barred from serving in the military

In many more, banned from combat or front line jobs

Challenges the view of a typical woman as the mentally and physically weaker sex

Strange / interesting / revealing aspects of Mulan II

Interesting/ Revealing / Strange

Mulan agrees to an arranged marriage although she is very, very against them.

She does this to save the princesses from having to marry someone they’ve never met.

Selflessness one of the qualities of a great Chinese warrior.

The princesses have a duty to their father the Emperor

They seem upset to have to follow through with the arranged marriages

They are in love with other people (Mulan’s three soldiers)

Mulan has impacted and inspired girls across China

Teaching others is a necessity of a General and soldier

What do the secondary sources say?

Disney's "Mulan"—the "True" Deconstructed Heroine

Mulan doesn't come off as a beautiful and passive princess who needs to be saved by a male figure

Mulan “forges a radically new terrain in the conception and depiction of women’s roles, not only in animated fairy tales, but also perhaps in other areas of life as well”

Mulan is the only true “hero” of Disney Princesses

Women Disguised as Men: Longing for the Past in Chinese Cinema

“when the yin (the female principle) is stronger than yang (the male principle) the country will be infelicitous”

“…glorifies romantic love between young people.”

Mulan is the “embodiment of loyalty and filial piety.”

Female Symbols of Resistance in Chinese Wartime Spoken Drama

“there is no question that female warriors like Mulan became the preeminent symbol of resistance in wartime China. They were the embodiments of loyalty and determination…They exerted a powerful impact on the minds and hearts of the Chinese people providing them with a sense of unity in a time of crisis.”

Chang-Tai Hung

The Ghost of Snow White

Mulan triumphs as a wise warrior of the highest caliber

Mulan is a tale of “war and conquest, guile, physical struggle and endurance.”

Mulan is a story about “the ability of the female to be as strong as aggressive as cunning as the male.”

Gillian Youngs

My Original Claim

Women are just as valuable in war and in life as men

They can offer the same things as men do

They have the same aspects of character (example: cunning, intelligent, etc.)

Clearly the critics and I have varying points of view on certain scenes and parts of Mulan II. But there are other aspects of the secondary sources that I agree with.

Mulan alters the view of woman’s roles

Mulan is a symbol of resistance

Mulan II shows that females can be just as powerful as males

Critics

Me

-Mulan doesn’t need a man,

she’s better off without Shang

-when the yin (the female

principle) is stronger than

yang (the male principle) the country will be infelicitous

-Mulan II is a story that glorifies

love

-Mulan II is a movie about war

-Mulan uses Shang as an asset

and close friend

-yin and yang need to be in

balance, if one is stronger

than the other, disorder

will happen (doesn’t have

to be the female one)

-Mulan II exhibits the importance

of love, but rather does

not glorify it.

On the surface, Mulan II seems to be about love and another mission to save China, but its true purpose is proving to the misogynistic Chinese Empire that women are just as valuable in war and in life as men.
