1. Background and Significance (25 points):
. This product is a new revolutionary pacemaker that is not only the world’s smallest pacemaker but also is leadless. The size of this pacemaker alone makes it very easy to implant in patients and doesn’t even require a very extraneous surgery. Simply inserted via catheter then deposited in the right ventricle where it will remain for the duration of its period of effectiveness (to be determined by Medtronic). Also the other major revolution of this product is that it’s size allows it to be implanted directly in the wall of the ventricle, right next to the Purkinje Fibers (or is it Bundle of His,). This implant site right at the point of affect enables the pacemaker to be leadless, to not require wires or other conductive sources that lead away from the pacemaker body.
. The new Medtronic Micra Pacemaker will not be as effective as the current Gold Standard at generating a proper signal.
0. Methods Part 1: Design of Experiment (20 points):
· Independent variable: the pacemaker, either the Medtronic Current Gold standard or the Medtronic leadless micra
· Dependent variable: Ability to consistently deliver the correct frequency to the patient's heart nodes
· Groups:
i. The group that will be sampled are people in their 50’s to 60’s all who have a need for pacemaker due to bradycardia. Randomly selected in the group which pacemaker they will receive.
ii. Controls:
ii. Age range is limited
ii. People with Bradycardia
ii. Same people will conduct the test for the frequency (dependent variable)
· Design:
i. This experiment will require 100 total participants all within the age range of 50-60 who all suffer from Bradycardia.
ii. Bias: The people who record the variable won’t be given any visual or physical cue as to which pacemaker is implanted, they will only see the EKG readout, be able to hear the heart, and be given a graph that displays the electric signals pulsing in the heart. Statistical analysis will be done by a third party so the company’s bias cant and wont affect the outcome of the testing.
0. Methods Part 2: Statistical Test and Justification (10 points):
· Two tailed, unpaired T-test
· We chose this test because the data we are testing for any significant difference from the Gold standard, positive or negative; the reason for the two-tailed T-test. The data will be unpaired because the people involved in the testing are two groups of different people that have different pacemakers implanted in them.
