Difference in Readmission Rates for Medicare Patient for Pneumonia in

California and New York

Reviewing the distribution of the data allowed us to eliminate outliers if necessary, determine normal distribution and decide the method that is best to test the hypothesis. Using GraphPad Software an outlier was detected for readmission rates for pneumonia for California and a t-test using the outlier and without the outlier was conducted and the difference was only 0.45, which is not significant enough to run the test without the outlier. Observation of 108 readmission rates were used, 51 counties in California and 57 counties in New York were used to analyze the outcome for the difference in readmission rates in Medicare patient for pneumonia.

There is a statistically significant difference between readmission rates for pneumonia in Medicare patients in California (M= 17.949 SD= 0.919) and New York (M = 18.999 SD = 1.226) with a t(106) 4.9862 p ≤ 0.0001, CI95 -1.4667, -0.632 allows us to reject the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference between California and New York for readmission rates for pneumonia in Medicare patients. With a difference of the means for California and New York of -1.0496, the confidence interval show that 95/100 times that we take samples from both states, we will get the same results, ultimately allowing us to come to the conclusion that the difference is not purely by chance.
