Research Question:

What are the favorite dinner foods for these five individuals?

Interview Questions:

· What kind of food do you like best to start a dinner of your choice? Describe it in detail and why you like it.

· What kind of food do you like best for a main course during a dinner of your choice? Tell me why it is your favorite.

· What kind of food do you like best for desert after a dinner of your choice? Describe the sensory experiences when eating this food.

· What other information can you tell about your favorite dinner selections, or where you may prefer to eat your favorite dinner foods?

*Responses to each interview question are coded P1 (Participant 1 etc.) to provide anonymity of participants. The transcripts are saved as a Word document and then uploaded to NVivo for coding.

Interview Question 1 Open Coding

QSR* NVivo open coding allowed the author to categorize responses to interview question 1 into four categories (e.g., salad, soup, bread, and miscellaneous). See Table 1 for details.

Interview Question 1 Axial Coding

NVivo assisted axial coding revealed the following:

1. The majority of participants (____%) indicated _______ as their favorite dinner appetizer/antipasto.

2. Over half (____%) reported ________ as their favorite dinner appetizer/antipasto.

3. Nearly (_____%) stated that __________ were their favorite dinner appetizer/antipasto.

Interview Question 1 Selective Coding

Sample: Favorite dinner appetizers and antipasto include Caesar salad and pasta Fagioli soup with or without fresh breadsticks.

Participant 1 had the most consistent selective coding response (i.e., speaking for the group as a whole) to interview question 1 and stated, “My favorite appetizers are a nice crisp romaine lettuce with a garlicky, but not too fishy or anchovies, and creamy dressing topped off with crunchy croutons. Of course, you have to have a bowl or cup of pasta soup topped with fresh parmesan cheese and a side of fresh baked bread sticks, buttered and sprinkled with a dusting of garlic. That really wets my appetite!”

**The process above is repeated for each interview question. Assume that your selective coding conclusions for interview question 2, 3, and 4 are as follows:

Interview Question 2. Friends & family favorite dinner main course is lasagna and pizza.

Interview Question 3. Friends & family favorite deserts are tiramisu and cannolis.

Interview Question 4. Friends & family prefer to eat their favorite dinner foods at Macaroni Grill or at home.

Theme for RQ 1

This is where the researcher must conclude the theme regarding the favorite dinner among Friends & family based on coding procedures.

…Italian food anyone?
