Courthouse observation paper (personal experience)

Location: Queens county criminal court

This is my first time went courthouse, I was expecting. The first thing I was impressive was security guard, when I walk through the metal detector, they found out I have packet knife and they confiscated it. But what did surprise me was that they gave me a receipt that shows what they got from me. That means when I leave courthouse, I can get my packet knife back. This reminds me of the experience I had in social security bureau in Jamaica. The situation was same, when I passed metal detector, they got my packet knife, but I never got back.

Then, we went to 4th floor for the trial, this was a formal trial just like what I see on the TV, 17 for jury, that was solemn room, there is a solemn words on the wall behind the judge, “In God We Trust.” This sentence fully embodies the religious culture of the United States. This case was about burglary. (Please listen to the recording, then summaries what about this case.) My opinion:  there was interest point which the counsel for the defense just keep saying police officer broken defendant’ leg. That is make me think that the job of lawyer is very important because any sentence or any word the say could make this case win or lost. However, there was no result for the case because judge need to hear one more witness.

Last place we went was ground floor. When people get arrested, this is first place they will be bringing to. (Please describe this place a little be based on the picture.) My opinion: this place is crowded and noisy. I don't like court police in this room because when judge talk to defense, court police just joking around, laughing and talking. I think court is most solemn place, and that was their working time, they shouldn't do that, when I was in that room, I feel I was in supermarkets instead of courthouse. Compare to court police on 4th floor, I like them, they are serious, quiet, just do what they need to do, they look more professional.
