Instead of writing a standard paper, you’ll be creating your own minisparknotes style site completing the following: Overview. Basic information/introduction to film: brief plot summary of the film (a paragraph or two maximum), plus key information: who directed, wrote, and starred in it; other key information. Characters A few compact, indepth psychological profiles of major characters. Write shorter (but still incisive) blurbs for minor ones. To develop character profiles(s), consider the below: Appearance. What does the character look like/how does the character carry himself or herself? How does he or she dress? (In considering appearance & carriage, what clues can you glean about the inner workings of your character?) Actions.What about actions what do we see him or her do? Are his/her actions “good”? “Bad”? Does the character act like everyone else? Or in surprising ways? How does he or she treat others? Is the character stereotypical in any way? Where else have you seen the stereotype? Reactions: how does he/she react to situations/people/stress? Motivation: what drives your character? What does he or she want? Fear. What is your character afraid of? And why? Change.Major characters undergo change. How does yours change? Do any of the above change? Why? How?
Setting. After reading this section, your readers should walk away with a much deeper understand of D9’s overall setting Johannesburg. Include research. Offer your readers a compact, indepth, researched exploration of what the setting is/its significance. ALSO: write a few blurbs about significant, specific places visited *within* the overall setting of the film:. Themes: XXXXX and XXXX. Choose two themes; discuss each.
Parallels: XXXXX and XXXX. Present two parallels where do you see ideas/etc from District 9 playing out in the real world/today’s news/elsewhere in pop culture/in mythology/in history/whatever you can think of? Present each parallel persuasively; use headlines/pics/video/multimedia/whatever you can think of to get your point across. District 9 and The Metamorphosis
Choose one or two points of commonality, and use quotes from The Metamorphosis to prove your point. Where do D9 and The Metamorphosis converge? Think theme what do they suggest about life? Humanity? You might also talk about history/realword context: anything similar there? Could you take a scene from The Metamorphosis and do a pointbypoint comparison (with depth) to a similar scene in D9? Could you talk about….? Wildcard your choice. What other kind of section could you include, to help people gain a greater understanding of the world of D9? (Best to do this after you’ve written some of the other sections… but start thinking about this now.) Suggestions for Further Reading. An annotated list of three interesting articles that discuss District 9 or issues pertinent to it, that you’ve discussed elsewhere on your site. (Go google scholar, or a newspaper or library database.)
