Opinion for Terrance 1.2 module
Which learning or instructional theories would you consider for teaching beginning algebra to 14- and 15-year-old students? Why? How would this choice differ from the theories you would select for teaching foreign language or social studies to the same group of students? Why?
The important step in considering teaching at this adolescent developmental stage is understanding this stage. Instruction utilizing connection and problem solving methodology are most effective in learning with adolescents, most students at this age are sponges. The eagerness to explore and learn is ardent. The key is to connect to this aspiration (Bush, 2005). The first stage would be to utilize language different from teaching it, more connecting the level they are at with understanding by comparison a synonymous analogy to the purpose of goal of the algebra or math solution (Bush, 2005). Communication utilizing didactic instruments, games, putting forth the concept and ideas with the steps to achieving will promote self-efficacy in cognition (Schoenfeld, 1992). Using understanding of the vocabulary level of the adolescent for connecting and making sense of mathematics begins with connecting and organizing the knowledge into an associative picture and encouraging development of problem solving skills. Teaching language is different from using language to teach. In teaching language, you have to connect expression to communication. Teaching math you are connecting conception and understanding with skillful survival and competiveness techniques stimulating cognitive enhancement (Schoenfeld, 1992).
