Many modern mathematics textbooks are designed with a flurry of color and graphics. This is in stark contrast to those that are designed in black-and-white and contain few graphics. Which of these formats is the optimal design for mathematics textbooks? Why?
The optimal design for mathematics textbooks uses not only text but also color and graphics. The use of color and graphics allows the information in the textbook to be understood by a greater amount of people. People learn in different ways, some people learn by reading text and others learn better seeing pictures and graphs. Having a textbook that uses all of these options can capture the attention of many students (Bezemer & Kress, 2010). The more engaged a student is in the information they more knowledge they will gain. If a textbook uses a both text and graphics, students that learn best through reading can skip over the graphics and just read the text. On the other hand, students that learn better through visual aids can read the text and look at the graphics for a better understanding of the information presented. This is a good way to reach a variety of students with different learning styles. If a teacher also reads all or portions of the text, then the auditory learners can also gain the same knowledge.
