Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde are organic compounds characterized by high vapor pressure at room temperature (Godish, Davis, & Fu, 2015). Texas Car Body Repairs is constructing a facility with an interior lining that has been carefully designed must ensure these components are low to meet the requirements of Texas laws and EPA regulations. The calculations for the VOC and Exempt solvent (ES) in a gallon of the coating are calculated as shown below.
VOC component calculation per gallon of coating.
The company uses 10 gallons of coating per car. Everyday two vehicles are coated which means per day = 10*2 gallons of coating are used = 20 gallons.
1 gallon of coating has 2.8 pounds of VOC
Therefore; 20 gallons of coating has – 20gallons*2.8 pounds/ 1 gallon
= 56 pounds of VOC content per day.
The minimum daily content is 500 pounds and this is lower thus acceptable.
Exempt solvent (ES) content calculation per day
1 gallon of coating contains 0.5 pounds of ES
Therefore: 20 gallons of coating has – 20 gallons*0.5 pounds/1 gallon
= 10 pounds of ES content per day.
