AN ANALYSIS OF THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The world is becoming increasingly small day in day out. This can be partly attributed to the ever improves being experienced in the level of technology. Technology has made the world so small that it has been given the name ‘a global village’. Today, people can communicate from any corner of the world at the comfort of their couches. This has been enhanced by the advancement of mobile technology, the internet and the World Wide Web, ("The internet has virtually reduced the world to a global village | Law Teacher", 2016). Traditional methods of communication have been replaced by simplified technology such as quick messaging services, the social medial and other elements of mobile technology at a very fast rate. This, of course, comes with many advantages. It is now easy to trade across the border. In fact, many people are opting to purchase their goods abroad since there are online market places that are easier to access than even most of the normal physical marketplaces. Communication has also become easier. Within seconds, a message could be forwarded to different corners of the world by a single or just a few individuals, ("The global village in international communication", 2016). When people are able to share ideas on a wider scope, it becomes easy for them to grow as they people have diverse opinions and schools of thought that they can share. This also comes with some risks that we are exposed to. This paper seeks to look into the risks that come with the advancement in the level; of technology both in the short run and in the long run.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Scope

This project seeks to explore the risks that have come as a result of increased technology and technology sharing between nations, societies and individuals. It will also look into the possibility of identifying such risks and their documentation which are critical steps in the risk management process. Many terrorist activities across the world have been associated with the advancement of technology for instance. Cancer has been said to be at times caused by the waves emanating from mobile technology. These are among the things that have prompted this study.

The project aims to look at the main risks that technology exposes us to whether knowingly or unknowingly. It also aims at looking into methods of identifying, documenting and mitigating the risks to reduce their impacts on our lives. The projects will however, not concentrate on the ways of dealing with the problems caused by the risks in question. For instance, if it is found out that those waves from mobile booster cables cause cancer, it will not look into methods of curing cancer. The budget is likely to pose a challenge to the researcher as they will be required to conduct interviews, use questionnaires and also move from one point to another to look for related information.

PROJECT MILESTONES

Project execution requires that it be conducted in an orderly manner to ensure a smooth running of activities. Milestones should therefore be set at the onset of the project, ("Project Planning Typical Milestones - Recognizing Common Milestones", 2016).The whole project will be conducted in milestones as follows:

Milestone1: Information gathering - the end result of this milestone will be a list of risks that people believe are associated with technology advancement. Information will be gathered from individuals, groups, and library research as well as over the internet.

Milestone2: Analysis of collected data – the data collected will need to be scanned and well analyzed to deduct meaningful information. This will be done both at the basic and higher level to accurately interpret the collected data.

Milestone3: Project reporting- Upon the analysis of data collected and comparing the same data with what is available in books and reputable internet sites, the findings will be provided in form of a comprehensive report. There will also be recommendations on how to mitigate the risks.

Cost constraints

The researcher will be expected to maintain a tight budget. They should expect to spend some money to create questionnaires, movements in the form of bus fair and there could also some hidden costs during the entire process.

Quality requirements

During the entire process of the research, quality will be of concern. The researcher will lay emphasis on the quality of the data they collect, credibility of the library books and sites they are to use so that the end result will be a high quality and informative report.

RISK IDENTIFICATION FRAMEWORK

There is need to identify the risks that are associated with phenomenon. It is the only way one can know how to plan for them. In fact, it is the first step of the risk management process, ("The Owner's Role in Project Risk Management", 2005). This must be well documented in the scope, work breakdown structure, schedule and also the execution plan, (Development, 2013).

The following techniques will be used for risk identification:

· Brainstorming- the project team will be engaged in wide discussions to point out what they believe to be possible risks resulting from technological advancement.

· Delphi technique- the project team will utilize questionnaires to individuals, groups and experts to come up with a list of possible risks.

· Use of cause and effect diagrams – various situations will be analyzed and the cause and effect diagrams will be drawn to deduct information.

· Expert judgement- the project team will use the results a team who have done a similar or an almost similar research to build upon their study.

RISK DOCUMENTATION

Risk documentation is an important step in the risk management process. The essence of this step is to give a clear message of the reasons for one to undertake in the research in question. It should be done in levels as follows:

Low-risk project documentation

Medium-risk project documentation

High risk project documentation, ("Project Documentation Guidelines | Standard for information technology project management | Virginia Tech", 2016)

For the purpose of this project, all the risks identified and that are directly as a result of advanced technology will be documented as above.
