Module Overview
In this course, you will learn about the differences in values, customs, beliefs, and communication styles among different cultures. As health professionals, we must learn to overcome our personal biases and assumptions and strive to honor and respect the beliefs, language, interpersonal styles, and health behaviors of others. In doing so, we move toward achieving cultural competence.
Before beginning the assignments in this module, you will need some background information. Go to Core Concepts in Cultural Competence. Read the Intro, review the Key Concepts, and then view the Lecture.
How this course relates to the health educators' 7 Areas of Responsibility
Area of Responsibility 1: Assess Individual and Community Needs for Health Education; specifically, being able to distinguish between behaviors that foster and hinder well-being, and identify factors that foster or hinder the process of health education.
Area of Responsibility II: Plan Health Education Strategies, Interventions, and Programs; specifically, the ability to design theory-based strategies and interventions, and to apply principles of cultural competence in selecting and designing strategies and interventions.
