PS1.A: STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER
Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
Standard units are used to measure and describe physical quantities such as weight, time, temperature, and volume. (5-PS1-2),(5-PS1-3)
Ten 45 minute periods
Teacher
model the use of scientific tools (balance, spring scale, thermometer, graduated cylinder, measuring cup)
model the application of the measurement units
prepare sets of substances to explore. Each set will have a solid, a liquid and a gas
guide students to adjust questions as needed
Students
working in groups of four, students will select a set of properties of matter to explore
students make general observations (such as color, shape, smell, weight/mass) about each substance and record their findings in the science journal
students discuss their observations and define a question they would like to explore about their set
each group writes their question on a large poster board and posts it in a designated location in the classroom
groups of students participate in a Gallery Walk around the classroom and discuss whether the selected questions are measurable and investigable
Students design an investigation plan that will allow them to:
Measure and record the physical properties of matter
Observe physical properties and changes of each substance individually
Observe the chemical properties and changes of each substance individually and mixed
The classroom or lab will have different exploration stations where students can conduct measurements
Students will create data tables where the results from the measurements will be recorded
Students will take notes in their observation journal
How can data collected about the properties of a substance be used to determine its physical and chemical characteristics?
Materials: triple beam balance, digital scale, spring balance, graduated cylinder, measuring cup, thermometer, timer.
Upon the completion of the investigation, students will organize their data and findings in a Lab Report that follows the steps of the scientific method. The lab reports will include the testable question, hypothesis, materials used, all of the data collected, model drawings of the steps of the investigation, data analysis and conclusions about the properties of each of the substances investigated.
On the board, create a table that lists the physical and chemical properties of substances and a table that lists the physical and chemical changes that substances undergo. Give each group of students two sets of different color sticky notes. On one color sticky notes, they are to write the physical/chemical properties of their substances, on another the physical/chemical changes. Then, they are to place the stickies in the appropriate columns. As a class, derive general classifications of the properties and changes of matter. Students will record the general findings about matter in their notebooks.
If a smart board is available, the activity may be modified so that students can record their answers in each column and the table can be saved and edited and serve as the students’ notes.
The student lab report will serve as the assessment for the lesson.
Extend the investigation by changing one variable such as the addition of heat
• students will use the internet to research/support their ideas
What effect will the addition of heat have on the properties of matter?
Students will be given different experiments and asked to write a possible conclusion to the experiment by answering the posed question
Students will discuss the possible outcomes in groups
Students will write the conclusion of thee given experiment based on the research they conducted and the conclusion gathered thorough investigation (if applicable)
Adequately use scientific tools to collect measurement data
Formative assessment through observations during lab
Summative assessment – is the data properly recorded on the lab report (are the proper units used, does the data make sense)
