The Importance of the Invention of the Gutenberg Printing Press in the 15th Century Europe
The invention of the printing press by Johann Gutenberg in the 1440s is one of the major shapers of world history. Gutenberg’s invention hugely increased the speed and breadth of sharing literature, information and ideas, leading to a rise in the spread of knowledge, literacy and science. This, in turn, had widespread socio-economic and political effects, initially in Europe and later in the rest world. The invention and spread of print technology, therefore, set the stage for great societal and cultural transformations. The aim of this paper is to examine the importance of the invention of the printing press in the 15th century Europe and beyond. More specifically, the socio-economic and political effects of this monumental invention will be investigated in depth. The study will adopt a largely qualitative approach. Secondary sources will be leveraged for the purpose of this research. More precisely, academic journal articles, books and credible internet sources will be used.
