Extra Credit Assignment: Spring 2016, Statistics 285: Section 04 35 points
Short Data Analysis Project/Methods Paper Due Date: Monday, May 2, 2016
Requirements - Data set of 20 points (observations, cases, study subjects, etc.) or more. (2 points)
Goal: Apply Methods learned from Chapters 2 through 8 to a data set gathered or provided by a reliable
source (Examples: www.census.gov; www.cdc.gov; etc. please not Wikipedia! Thank you!).
A. Data Analysis Portion
From Chapter 2: (2 points)
Use relative frequency, mean, standard deviation, range, inter-quartile range, lower and upper limit values, box plot and bar or pie chart.
From Chapter 3: (4 points)
Analyze the data set with at two types of probability methods.
From Chapters 4: (Choose 2: 6 points)
Discrete Random Variables, Mean and Standard Deviation
Binomial Distribution
Poisson Distribution
Hypergeometric
Percentiles, Z-scores
From Chapter 5: (Choose 2: 3 points)
Calculate the sampling distribution based on the mean
Compute the sampling distribution of the sample proportion
From Chapter 6: (Choose 2: 3 points)
Calculate the population mean, the confidence interval either sigma known or unknown Apply Either the Normal z Statistic or t-interval procedure (based on sample size and distribution of
data)
Calculate the necessary sample size
From Chapter 7: (3 points)
Formulate hypothesis test for μ and illustrate rejection region
Apply Hypothesis Test either using Normal z Statistic or Student's t-Statistic
From Chapter 8: (Choose 2: 4 points)
Compute the standard deviation and confidence interval for two independent samples (will need a second data set of n = 20)
Calculate either a one-tailed or two-tailed hypothesis test
Calculate the paired difference confidence interval for µd = μ1 - μ2
Use the large sample test of hypothesis about p1 - p2 Normal z statistic

B. Interpretation (Explanation of Results – 10 points)
After completing all the statistical tests, write a report (at least two paragraphs), describing the rationale for the
statistical methods selected.
Make sure to address the following questions in your report, i.e. who, what, where, when and why, and how.
(1) Who or what is the unit of analysis? (2) Where is the data collected from, including the source website? (3) When was the data collected--what time frame, i.e. year, months. (4) Why is the research question important. (5) How do these statistical methods answer your research question? How do they illustrate or explain the
objective of your paper?
Then, in the third or final paragraph, summarize your conclusion based on your results. Find one scholarly
article (refereed journal publication) to support your interpretation of your results (why you believe your
conclusions are supported by the literature and why the methods you applied in your study support your
hypothesis). Refereed journals articles can be accessed easily via www.scholar.google.com or any of the
indexes available through our www.libraries.rutgers.edu downloadable in PDF format. Research investigators
consult the existing body of knowledge or conduct a literature search first when developing and testing
hypotheses, to extend, replicate and build on existing empirical research (i.e. based on hypothesis testing) —
either quantitative or qualitative.
