Introduction
Anthropometry is the study and measurement of the human body, its parts and its capacities. It is essential that workplace dimensions match the body dimensions as well as its limitations of the expected workers in the workplace. In this regard, anthropometric data can be vital in having a good match between workplace dimensions and worker body dimensions. In work environments where anthropometric data is ignored this can cause various WMSD’s, which in turn would lead to lower productivity and higher work compensation cost. Anthropometric information is, therefore, critical to designing safe and comfortable workplaces. This lab exercise was conducted based on two primary tasks, which include mating the engine to the mower deck and attaching the wheels to the mower deck.
Objectives of the experiment
The objective of this study is to measure and analyze the physical anthropometric characteristics of humans that are essential in designing an assembly work station to accommodate the different dimensions of the workforce population.
Conclusion
This report provides assistance, through the use of anthropometric measures, to design the assembly station for a residential push lawnmower. In this study, seven anthropometric measurements and gender were obtained from the workforce population. From our results, it can be seen that there was a large standard deviation in various anthropometric measurements due to having more male workers than female workers. The results also include the guidelines for working surface height, reach requirements, and height requirements. For this reason, adjustability has to be set in place in the assembly workstation in order to cater for the gender differences. We determined that the range of adjustability for the entire working population of the different anthropometric data starts from the 5th percentile female to the 95th percentile male. If this adjustability was implemented in designing the workstation, productivity will increase and this also will lead to less fatigue on the job, which can cause work related musculoskeletal disorders.
