Activity 1:

How to Identify Characteristics of a Research Study

You will work in groups of two to three students for this exercise. ONE completed assignment will be turned in for each group.

In this activity, you will apply the concepts from class so far to the following two articles, which were posted on MOODLE:

· Brown, J., Sorrell, J., McClaren, J., Sharma, A., & Creswell, J. (2006). Waiting for a liver transplant. Qualitative Health Research, 16(1), 119–136.

· Constantine, M. G., Wallace, B. C., & Kindaichi, M. M. (2005). Examining contextual factors in the career decision status of African American adolescents. Journal of Career Assessment, 13(3), 307–319.

QUESTIONS to complete for In-Class Activity 1

1. Are the citations provided above given using the American Medical Association format? If not, please provide correct citation format.

For the following questions, do NOT give general definitions of each concept or general answers – use specific examples from the readings.

2. Define ontology. Define epistemology. Identify statements in the articles or characteristics of the study designs that indicate the ontology and epistemology of each study.

3. Define theory. Describe how theory was used in each study.

4. Name and describe the strategy of inquiry (study design) that was used in each study.

5. Describe the data collection, analysis and interpretation methods used in each study.

6. Based upon the information you provided in Questions 2-5 above:

a. Identify the type of research approach (qualitative, quantitative or mixed method) used for each study.

b. Identify the philosophical worldview/paradigm likely held by the researchers/authors for each study.
