Current Trends and Patterns of use in the US

How many people or what percentage of the population are using methamphetamine now?

Methamphetamine: compare past and current Oregon statistics, and crimes related to meth use. Why do law enforcement personnel never approach a meth house without backup? Besides the user/addict having physical and psychological problems, explain what impact meth abuse has on family and community.

Make sure to define and explain the difference between street meth and prescription methamphetamine.

Resources: Make sure to list your sources of information in your report.

National Institute of Drug Abuse: NIDA= http://drugabuse.gov/nidahome.html

Look for “infofacts” on methamphetamine for basic information and patterns of use

Substance Abuse and Mental Health: www.samhsa.gov

Also:“The Meth Epidemic” online: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/view/

Look for National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) and Drug abuse Warning Network (DAWN) reports to find current use patterns, treatment statistics for most drugs.

If available, include information (briefly) about the impact on society (crime statistics, number of deaths per year, what part of the USA is having trouble with meth, and other relevant data).

Cite your sources of information for the report.

Be sure to define and explain: duration of action for one dose; explain why there are such dramatic mood swings; how long can a (speed run) binge last and why; depression during withdrawal and its implications for recovery
