Describe the goals of clinical assessment and diagnosis. Explain how these goals affect treatment.
The main goals of clinical assessment and diagnosis include description, treatment and prediction. Clinical assessment includes collecting as much information as possible about the symptoms of a client so as to determine whether an individual is suffering from a mental disorder. The information gathered includes feelings, thoughts and behaviors, disruptiveness, duration of the condition and influences. A detailed description of a person will help in classifying the mental disorder affecting an individual. Descriptive assessment may also help in developing a treatment plan for the client as well as helps in evaluating the treatment outcome. The third goal of collecting detailed information about the client is to be able to make some informed prediction as regards the future behavior of the client (Millon, Green, and Meagher, 2012).
These goals affect treatment in several ways. First, accurate diagnosis of the problem helps in choosing the best and effective therapeutic intervention. It helps the psychologists in matching the patient’s mental disorder to the best treatment intervention that ensure their full recovery. Clinical assessment also help in finding out whether an individual is ready to change and if not, the clinician will need to apply the required strategies to persuade the person to play an active role in the treatment process as only then will it be a success. Hence, clinical assessment helps in establishing a cooperative relation between the patient and the psychologist. Moreover, it helps in identifying and preventing barriers that can discourage a person’s participation in treatment (Millon, Green, and Meagher, 2012).
