EGR202 Spring 2016

Read Chapter 3 from Bornstein’s book, How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas (the pdf is saved as an attachment). After reading this chapter you are to write a reflection with three parts.

1) Describe one of the challenges that Fabio Rosa encountered and how he moved past that challenge.

2) Discuss at least one example of a challenge that you would expect to face if you tried to implement your design solution into your target community. Describe at least three ways that you could try to overcome that challenge.

3) Discuss why you think it is important for engineers to consider the user and the larger context when working on design problems.

Submission Guidelines:

Please follow the guidelines below for your submission:

· You have one page to formulate a well-structured answer to the above questions (1 inch margin around, 12 pt Times New Roman, 1.0 line spacing). This word document can be used as a template. Do not include the question text in this page.

· Submit your exam in one pdf document that uses the following naming convention: “Lastname_Firstname_final_reflection.pdf.”

· Include your name in the header of the document.

Quality

Disjointed rambling without clear focus or specific details from the course

Sequential narrative structure, additive account with some examples and detail. Formatting is used to organize the reflections (paragraphs as needed). Minimal grammatical or typographical errors.

Structure supports message of the account. Details are purposefully employed to convey understanding of the reading and a critical reflection of role of cultural and organizational aspects in design.

Understanding (focus on part 1 of the reflection)

The written reflection does not suggest that the chapter was read critically.

Explanations of one of Fabio’s challenges and how he overcame that challenge demonstrate understanding but are still very close to the way presented in the reading.

Explanation of one of Fabio’s challenges demonstrates a critical understanding of the chapter.

Challenges in your project (focus on part 2 of the reflection)

Generic description of expected challenge when implementing your design into the local community.

Focus is on a simple, easy to identify implementation challenge. Shows some insight and critical thinking.

Discussion of expected implementation challenges demonstrates critical thinking and creativity. Explanations of expected challenges and potential solutions demonstrate a personally constructed understanding of your design solution and the context in which it is situated within.

Engineering Understanding (focus on part 3 of the reflection)

Did not discuss the importance of considering the user and the larger context for engineering designers.

Some thoughtful discussion on why considering the user and larger context are important for engineers.

Critically reflected on the role of the user and context in engineering practice. May have used an example to demonstrate this understanding.
