Human Rights and Business
Short Paper 3
For the third paper, you will write a memo based on the following scenario. The papers should run between 800-1000 words. Feel free to be creative in tone and content while meeting all of the assignment’s requirements.
You are the ethics officer for a young UK-based company that produces engines. Failed State Supreme government wishes to buy your engines and bring your company’s experts to assist in extracting platinum in its country. Failed State Supreme is characterized by a repressive dictatorship, weak governance, poor social services, and a dismal human rights record. A platinum mine was recently discovered and an extractive industry is taking root in the country with the possibility for amassing great riches for Failed State Supreme and MNCs. Failed State Supreme insists that extracting platinum will bring about social and economic benefits to the country. While once there was a civil war, there is now a period of relative peace. The extractive industry in Failed State Supreme is currently dominated by Asian companies with fewer ethical scruples.
Consider the following:
Should your company enter Failed State Supreme? If not, why? If so, under what operating conditions? What are the risks for committing or being complicit in human rights violations?
Write a memo to your CEO and advise her on what course to take. Define and discuss at least three of the various conceptual schemes/frames for human rights and business in your assessment: CSR, Global Compact, Guiding Principles, Corporate Complicity, Voluntary Codes of Conduct, Certification Schemes, and Spheres of Influence. You may wish to briefly cite case studies of MNCs that committed human rights violations as a warning but the primary focus of the paper should be on the conceptual schemes/frames for managing human rights and business.
These papers should be drawn primarily from the course material and do not require outside research.
You are expected to quote from at least three different readings or films and include a bibliography (MLA or Chicago style).
Please submit these papers to your drop box. They should be font 12, times new roman, and spell-checked. Please mark each paper: NAME SHORT PAPER 3. Doc
