“Immigration Benefits America” Is More Convincing Than “Immigration Threatens American culture”

Nowadays, immigrates becomes a very powerful human source in the United States. Bill Clinton is the 42nd president of United States. He writes a speech name “Immigration Benefits America”. In his work, he tries to prove huge number of immigrants may threaten nation’s cohesion. But new immigrants is good for America .They are building America new economic, new immigrants can makes American more strong and unity if they do their responsibility. Also, America can training them to makes them successful in America .On the other side, Lawrence, Auster, He wrote an essay “Immigration Threatens American Culture” tries to persuade reader that immigration after 1965 has negative change to American culture. He also recommends revising the law to refuse new immigration into America. Comparing “Immigration Benefits America” and “Immigration Threatens American culture” Obviously, Clinton’s essay “Immigration benefits America” is more convincing to reader by his persuasive evidence and his positive tone.

Clinton has many stronger evidences than Auster’s evidences to prove his points. Generally, evidence with full of details and true story makes it be a persuasive evidence. Clinton writes many this kind of evidence in his work. For example, In “immigration benefits America”, Clinton writes this evidence :“Mago Glison, an immigrant from Mexico who came here without a high school education. Twelve years late she is receiving her Master’s Degree in education…her son Eddi who had dreams of his own and worked full time for seven years…”(87).He use this specific evidence with many details ,tries to prove that immigrants are working hard and building America dream together. He points a name and tells reader a true story about immigration that studies in America and works in America. It makes his evidence more persuasive and stronger .Also these kinds of evidence all serve for his thesis: “immigration benefits America”. It effectively makes his work more convincing.

On the other side, Although Auster also tries to use some evidence to makes his essay more convincing. But unfortunately, his evidence is partial, he avoid all good influence of immigration. He introduce many indecent phenomena about immigrants in the first paragraph of his essay, and he writes this in his essay “Each of these phenomena and many more like them are happening for one reason and one reason only—the 1964 immigration Act which opened U.S immigration on an equal basis to every country in the world” (16) He wants to use these evidence to prove immigrants is bad for America culture. Every bad phenomena happened just because immigrants which into America after 1964. But his evidence doesn't make his essay more convincing. He’s evidence is partial. He introduced at least 10 bad things that immigrants did to America, but he doesn’t talk about even one thing that immigrants benefit America. He avoids immigrants benefits America intentionally. These kinds of evidence can’t make his essay more convincing .After compares these evidences from Clinton’s and Auster’s essay. Clinton has more convincing work in this part.

Clinton not just has more persuasive evidences than Auster’s. He also has better tones than Auster’s. In Clinton’s essay, he uses some positive tone, for example, “So members of the class of 1998, go out and build the future of your dreams. Do it together, for your children, for your grandfather, for your country.” (92) Clinton does a good work in this part. He encourages people to do it for our self, for our family and for our country. This positive tone can lead readers emotional. Ethos is also a good way to make an essay persuasive. Clinton’s tone really makes his work more persuasive. To compare these two essays. Auster’s has unneutral tone. He writes that in his essay: “We cannot hope to stop or significantly slow that immigration unless abandon this contemporary idea that America is defined by nothing except individual freedom and opportunity…”(21). This isn’t a neutral tone. Because he writes these sentence like there is the only way to solve this problem. But it’s obviously not true. There are many other ways to solve this problem. He wants to makes his essay noncommittally, but it just the opposite of what he wishes. After compare these two essays tones. Clinton has more convincing tone than Auster’s.

Although Auster tries to makes his essay persuasive, But Clinton’s “immigration benefits America” obviously is a more convincing essay than “immigration threatens American culture”. Clinton’s strong evidence and his positive tone make his work credible. Clinton does a better job to write the essay making reader convincing than Auster.
