Why U.S government shouldn’t continue bilingual service

Topics about bilingual service for immigrants are always popular in human social. Bilingual service means government provide others language besides English to public service .These years, people and researchers in United States write a lot of paper and do a lot of research to argue for bilingual service or against it. For example, James Fallows, Who is a Washington editor of The Atlantic magazine since the late 1970s.He is a representative from group which is support bilingual service. He deems that bilingual service no effect about United States unity, actually bilingualism is benefit for immigrants live in The United States And also bilingual education is good for students learning in school. However despite these kinds of opinions, in fact, bilingual service is more harm than good to United States government. The United States government shouldn’t continue bilingual service because of it makes some citizens feels uncomfortable, gives government heavy financial burden, reduces the incentive to people to learn English and harmful effect student study in school.

Some people argue that bilingual service is help immigrants have a better life in United States, bilingual service makes many people feel well in America. But unfortunately, it’s not the truth. Bilingual service actually makes a lot of citizens feel uncomfortable. Dale L. brand writes a book which name is ‘The Clash of Cultures in San Antonio Church’. He defines many influences about bilingual service in United States. He claims some evidences in his book “Some were saying that we were starting to have 40% of the service Spanish…every time they heard Spanish in the service their resentment was so large that the Spanish became more and more uncomfortable and appeared to be greater than it really was.” (291)He points that bilingual service does make many citizens feel uncomfortable .His other research in his book also shows us some truth like: people feel under the weather with bilingual service even though it was very limited. That means bilingual service probably makes people feel malaise anywhere and anytime. The worst thing is people always remember the uncomfortable things and they become a big issue. But why many people feel uncomfortable with bilingual service? Tim Archer who writes an essay to sums up 5 reasons to makes people feel indisposed with bilingual service. Here are these reasons: “Habit, Loyalty, familiarity, fear and culture different.” Normally, people who born in The United States speak English their whole life. They used to live in an environment with English. A new strange language will enter in their life when government starts bilingual service. It is surely changing their life. Some of them feel fear about strange languages because they can’t read that. They didn’t familiar with this stranger language. Feel fear with unknown thing is the common point from the nature of man. Also some people feel culture impact from bilingual service. They don’t like see other language in some particular place like church. Although the government provides this bilingual service is designed for citizens better life, but the government really shouldn’t continue this service if it's truly making many citizens feel uncomfortable.

In most of essays which are support bilingual service in United States, they generally avoid a problem in their essay: financial burden problem. Mauro E Mujica who is the Chairman/CEO of U.S. English writes an essay “Why the United States Needs an Official Language”. He claims evidence about financial issue of bilingual service “Bilingual education alone is estimated to cost taxpayers billions of dollars per year. The federal government has spent over 100 million to study the effectiveness of bilingual education.”(582) it is a huge cost for The United States government. But it is just a little part cost of multilingualism. Obliviously, bilingual service can bring a heavy financial burden to United States government. Not only a huge pays for bilingual education, but also cost a huge number of money in other part of multilingualism. In another hand, bilingual service also makes companies have to face financial issues. Air Canada the biggest Airline Company in Canada. “They spend more than $9,265,000 per year conforming to Canada's bilingual requirements, requiring the airline to generate an additional $185,000,000 in additional sales to cover these costs.” The government serve bilingual service certainly will force many companies have to face a huge fiscal expenditure.

Apparently, huge number of financial expenditure that bilingual service brings to the government and company makes pressure to them. It is a serious problem that government should consider about.

Now everyone knows bilingual service cost a huge number of money. But someone still argue for this money is worth. Bilingual service help immigrants learning English in an easily way, it likes a buffer zone for immigrants from none English speaker to a perfect bilingual speaker. But it’s also not true, Bilingual serve is bad for incentive immigrants to learn English. Mujica claims this evidence in his article “Our government makes it easy for immigrants to function in their native languages through bilingual education…the need to speak and understand English has served as an important incentive for immigrants to learn the language and assimilate into the mainstream of American society.”(581)He claims this to prove immigrants learning English is want to integrate into American society. But bilingual service gives them a more comfortable society so they can live in American society without learning English. It is a destructive impact for immigrants’ incentive to learn English. Most immigrants are not willing to learn if it’s not necessary. The consequence is that the government do bilingual service makes that 8 percent of the American population are classified as "limited English” when 2000s. It’s not a good message for The United States. The government shouldn’t continue bilingual service to encourage immigrants learning English.

Even bilingual service has many disadvantages, but there are still some voices to support bilingual education. They try to introduce that bilingual education is benefits for students to study in school. Actually, teaching student only in English is better than bilingual education. S.I.Haykawa, who is an English professor and served as president of San Francisco State University, He supports students should be teaches in English in his essay “bilingualism in America :English should be the only language”. He claims that in his work “Their children complain of systematically being segregated from their English-speaking peers. Now in high school, these students cite the failure of the program to teach them English first as the reason for being years behind their classmates.”(577)He proves bilingual education harmful effect to students. Bilingual education actually is a barrier to students study in school. Student willing speak their native language in class and it’s obviously affecting their learning in school. As Hayakawa said some students failure of programs because they didn’t get enough English teach class. So bilingual education a certain extent is bad for student. On the other hand, Bilingual education separate students into different group in school. Because of bilingual education, students can speak their own language in class. That makes students talk to their native speaker more than other students .Like Korean only talk to Korean, French only talk to French. That’s not help for student learning English and knowledge in school. Also it seriously hindered students’ communication because their communication space is getting smaller. So in fact, Bilingual doesn’t help students study in school, exactly the opposite, its harmful effect to students.

For the conclusion, many countries still keep serve bilingual service until today. It truly brings them into many troubles. Like Canada have to face serious fiscal deficits .Like Indian have to deal with many education problems in their country because of bilingual education. The United States government doesn’t have to face these kinds of problems. If the government wants to avoid from huge number of cost, if the government wants to makes more citizens feel comfortable, if the government wants to encourage people to learn English, if the government wants to help students learning better in the school. They should just stop serve bilingual service. Bilingual service harm more that good for The United States. Stop bilingual service and give citizens a better life.
