Introduction
The demand for goods and services keep on increasing day in day out with the increase in human needs. Businesses are striving to satisfy the needs of their customers by coming up with new as well as technologically advanced products and services. What cannot be obtained in a particular locality is produced somewhere else and transport to these areas through the various means of transport available. There are various ways of transportation that businesses can choose from and the type to be used significantly depend on various factors such as the perishability of the product as well as how agent the product is needed at its destination. For instance, horticultural products are normally transported by mail because they are perishable whereas goods such as electronic devices may be transported through the sea which may take much longer time compared to the other means of transport, (Goetz & Budd, n.d.).
On that note, this paper will be covering air as a means of transport and some of the major challenges that player in this industry suffer from especially those in the logistics section. These are those companies or organizations that are in the business of transporting goods and services for other companies by the use of airplanes. This is the most expensive means of transport, and this means that it is an effective an efficient mode of transport for highly valuable goods that are worth the high expenses. This is because it will be absurd to transport goods of low value by air only to make them more expensive and thus making it difficult to conduct business. However, there are special occasions where low-value goods may be transported by rail, and this may be because of the urgency of such goods as mentioned earlier.
One of the major users of air transport is the aviation engineering sector. This is a sector that is responsible for designing as well as building aircraft. The recent past few years have seen the transport industry grow substantially following the growth of various businesses and companies. This has resulted in an increase in demand for the various forms of transport as more individuals seek for efficient means of transport while traveling for vacations, business meetings or even moving good from the production point to the global market. With air transport being the most effective and efficient means of transport with regards to speed, airline companies were faced with the challenge of being unable to meet the growing demand for air transport. To overcome this problem, the airline companies make orders for new aircraft so as to meet the increasing demand for air transport.
There result of the increasing demand for ait transport is that airplane manufacturing companies will have pressure to manufacture more aircraft within the shortest time possible so as to meet the demand of the airline companies. Aircraft manufacturing consumes both time and resources because of the level of complexity involved manufacturing process. To be able to use the shortest time possible, airplane manufacturers have to decentralize the production process and have various airplane parts manufactured at different plants and then transported to one central place where the parts will be assembled into a complete structure, (Williams & Bråthen, 2010). This is where the company that I work for comes in because it deals with transporting the manufacture airplane parts to where they will be assembled into a complete airplane.
Research problem
The airline industry offers not only a safe but also a convenient way of shipping goods from one geographical location to another within a very short time. As such, many individuals, businesses or organization sort to use these services while undertaking their business activities. However, there is a challenge that the airlines face with the handling of the goods being ships by air especially in the case of airplane parts. The airplane part cost thousands of dollars, and it becomes a major problem for the airlines when the location of some of the parts of transit cannot be identified or determined.
There is also the issues of airlines outsourcing the courier services from other companies such as DHL or UPS among others. This has been brought about by the increase the number of items that need to be shipped and as such companies have to use all the available resources to see it through that they ship the airplane parts within the stipulated timeframe. As such, the logistics department of an airline company finds itself in the tight spot when it cannot be able to determine the location of some of the airline parts that have been shipped in their care because they were transported using different planes and also different freight companies.
The research will, therefore, see it through that the company I am working for can overcome this problem and put its house in order with regards to having a clear and traceable shipment line and schedule for the airplane parts. A quantitative research method will be used in the research, and this will enable the researcher to determine the sources of the problem as well as determined the measures that can be employed by the company to see it through the problem of losing track of the airline parts in shipment is solved, (Lawrence & Kleinman, 2015).
The researcher will conduct a secondary research study of the company of interest so as to obtain data that will be analyzed to develop the recommendations. The data will include the following:
· Why does the company use other shipping company even though it can do so on its own?
· Does the company employ the use of modern technology in its operations?
· Does the tracking problem cost the company more time and resources which increasing the operating costs?
· What makes it necessary for the parts to be shipped separately other than being shipped in categories for a single shipment on one plain?
The above questions are linked to the problem being faced by the company, and when the answers to the questions are obtained, then the researcher will be in better position to develop a viable solution that would potentially solve the shipping problems for the company. This will, in turn, see it through the company can run a shipping business that is viable, reliable and continent to the clients as well as the company itself, (Helbæk & McLellan, 2010)
Proposed methodology
This section of the paper will cover the design as well as the methods that will be used in the research to collect data, the instrumentation of the process as well as the analysis of the collected data that will give an insight to the research problem. The researcher will, therefore, be able to use the analyzed information to determine the suitable answers to the research questions which will also see it through that the objectives of the research are achieved.
