Class,
Describes the three primary functions of operating systems to be convenience, efficiency, and the ability to evolve.
· Convenience: the operating system makes a computer's hardware more convenient to interact with.
· Efficiency: the OS enables the system's resources to be consumed more efficiently.
· Ability to evolve: operating systems are constructed in a manner that allows them to be enhanced or upgraded with new system functions without disrupting the existing level of service.

· Having a computer that is convenient to access programs, save programs, and so much more is amazing. Having a user that is not able to do much more than basic commands and knowing how to access them is the best one. I know that I just got a new computer and I really don't like how much the new Windows 10 over takes my options...makes me have to do certain things.

Microsoft and Apple seemed to have the edge in the convenience arena. Their OSs were relatively easy to add peripherals whereas Linux was much harder to accomplish. Linux users often had to download and compile binaries to install hardware or even software components. Windows and Apple streamlined the process which made these OSs more convenient for the users.
Please talk about with your own words of what they are talking about.

Class,
According to the text, an operating system (OS) is the intermediary between the computer's user and its hardware. The OS is responsible for managing the computer's hardware, and various operating systems serve a variety of purposes. Mainframes for example are utilized to optimize hardware performance, whereas mobile operating systems like Android and iOS are designed to allow the user easy access to the machine's functions. Somewhere in between are personal computers which support complex games and business applications.

You make some good points about different OSs and what they are used for.
Some applications have re-tooled OSs like Linux to only performs specific operations. ATMs for example are OSs built with menuing functions built in.
Are there any other applications that use modified OSs for functionality?
