SHORT RESPONSE PAPER 5: Brooks, “the mother” To be turned in as a hard copy at the start of class on Tuesday 29 March
In Gwendolyn Brooks’ poem, “the mother,” the poem’s speaker reflects on her choices to undergo abortion procedures on more than one occasion. Do you read this as a pro-choice poem, a pro-life poem, or as a poem that takes a more ambiguous stance on abortion? Support you argument with evidence from the poem as well as close readings and analysis. Be specific and use proper citations. Be sure to use details from the poem as evidence. You must have in-text citations for any lines you quote from the poem. You must have a Works Cited page and an entry for the poem. See Writing Today, Chapter 27 for help. Failure to include a Works Cited page and/or in-text citations when necessary will result in lost points. This would also constitute plagiarism and will result in, at least, a 0 on the assignment and a meeting with me. In addition to Chapter 27, see online resources for MLA style at the MLA (Modern Language Association) website or at the Purdue OWL (Online Writing Lab) website for help with in-text citations an/or works cited entries. Responses should be in MLA format. They should be 1-2 pp. in length and double- spaced with 1” margins. Use Times New Roman font and be sure to have a header and title.
