Reality Assignments

The purpose of the Reality Assignments is to give you real-life experience with the major

periods of human development. Each assignment is worth 100 points. You will choose

three of the nine options.

I am not your audience for these assignments. Your audience is a reasonably

educated person who might not understand many aspects of human development.

Therefore, your explanations of course material should be clear and precise. I

should not have to guess that you know what you are talking about.

Assignment Components Reality assignments will include the following: a brief

introduction in which you summarize your experience; the identification and explanation

of three specific concepts or principles from the course that are relevant to your

experience; proper application of each of these three concepts (an explanation of how

each concept accentuated your experience by increasing your understanding or enhancing

your perspective); and a brief conclusion.

Assignment Specifications Assignments must be 2 full pages typed using 12-point New

Times Roman font. Assignments must be double-spaced and have one-inch margins.

These assignments will give you the opportunity to integrate your own experience with

class information. Please put information from the notes and the textbook in your own

words (try not to quote word for word), and then cite these two sources in the text of

your paper. Cite the textbook as (Erford, 2017, p. ) and class notes as (T. Christensen,

class notes, CNL7023, Spring 2016). You must cite either class notes or the textbook

for each concept that you reference. No additional sources are required, aside from

class notes and the book. A reference page is unnecessary if you are only citing class

notes and the book. However, if you choose to use additional sources (e.g., scholarly

journal articles), you must cite them in-text and provide a reference section in your

paper. Also, as you write, please maintain others’ confidentiality by changing the names

of people that you discuss in your paper.

Option 2: TODDLERHOOD/EARLY CHILDHOOD—Toy Store

Visit a toy store and look at the toys through the eyes of a young child. Identify the store

that you visited and briefly summarize your experience. Then, identify and explain at

least three specific course concepts or principles that are relevant to your experience. For

each concept or principle, explain how your knowledge of this information enhanced

your experience. You might consider reflecting on the following questions:

a. Which toys seemed to be the most popular?

b. How do the toys facilitate physical and/or cognitive development?

c. Do the toys appear to facilitate or hinder social interaction/cooperation? Why,

in your opinion?

d. Do these toys appear to encourage imaginative play, or do their sounds, lights,

colors, and gadgets prevent the need for imagination? Describe some examples.

e. What do you notice in the toy store that you have not thought to consider

before?
