Fast Foods

PURPOSE: To persuade the audience to avoid eating fast food and find alternative.

SPECIFIC PURPOSE: I expect my audience to be knowledgeable about advantages and disadvantages of fast food and how they should reduce fast food consumption.

INTRODUCTION

Fast food refers to those food products which can be served and eaten quickly. They are commonly being consumed by the people in their routine life. Few of the famous restaurants that serve fast food are McDonalds, KFC, and Taco Bell etc. They are consumed by people of all age groups, in all places and offer a wide variety.

Attention Getter: Can you imagine yourself to be without fast food for at least one week while being a student?

I intend to cover about the advantages and disadvantages of fast food, how they impact the health of consumers, how to reduce their intake etc.

BODY

I. Advantages of Fast foods:

1. The common examples of fast food are readymade sandwiches which can be warmed in microwave and eaten, carbonated soft drinks, cold storage food products like pre-prepared breads, chicken wings or patties, potato flakes, onion rings etc. They consist of cheap ingredients with a lot of preservatives to keep larger shelf life of the food products. So, shopkeepers can buy them today and sell them even after a long period of time.

2. As per a research conducted by Palo Alto Medical Foundation, there are more than 50,000 chains selling fast food in various areas of United States. It also shows that fast foods are commonly available.

3. Fast foods are cheaper in price and are easily available at various locations. They are available in various varieties so people get attracted too. They are good in taste and better in looks. Even one can have them while driving or walking and hence fast foods are handy too. Fast foods have higher filling and can be eaten quickly too to save time. Therefore, people like to eat them.

II. Disadvantages of Fast foods:

1. They are high calorie products which increases the cholesterol in our body. They have many ingredients which are addictive by nature, making the consumer to buy fast food again and again.

2. There is higher amount of sugar and sodium in fast food. It increases obesity in the consumers and also cause cardiovascular diseases.

III. How to reduce fast food intake:

1. One should prefer eating the natural food items. It can be done by adding more raw vegetables and fruits in the diet than sauces and jams.

2. Prefer to drink water over carbonated drinks. One can add lemon or soup to give a flavor too.

3. Prefer to prepare food at home instead of restaurants. It will help to control the ingredients, sauces and make the food freshly.

4. Eat vegetarian food and organic food items instead of burgers and cold storage patties. Save time from other activities to do cooking at home.

Reduced intake of fast food would help the consumers to save money by eating at home instead of going out at restaurant. It will also save the medical expenses in the long run as the health will be better in routine life. Thus, there will be many advantages of avoiding fast food and eating fresh food.

CONCLUSION

It concludes that fast food items area consumed majorly because of their cheaper prices, easy availability and wide variety. They are not healthy and may cause obesity and heart diseases. One should try to avoid fast foods by preparing fresh meals at home, adding more vegetables and reducing the amount of pre-prepared sauces bought from the market. We all need to change his lifestyle to save time for cooking and then he can eat healthy food.
