Public Interest

State: The welfare of well-being of the general public

Elaborate: In contrast to the selfish interest of a person, group or a firm, in which the whole society has a stake in an outcome. Public interest warrants recognition, promotion, and protection by the government and its fellow agencies.

Public interest is calculated by comparing the expected gains and potential losses and cost that would be associated with the decision, policy, project or program that is being considered. It is often considered to be the core of democratic theories of government, and associated with the concepts of convenience and necessity.

Demonstrate: In 1927, Congress passed the Radio Act of 1927, in order to bring order to the chaos of radio broadcasting. During this process, Congressional representatives had to deal with free speech issues that went in favor of the public interest, therefore limiting free speech in radio broadcasting.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) works to represent the public interest of Civil Engineers with about 150,000 members in 177 countries. As the oldest engineering society, it works to support a profession that “plans, designs, constructs, and operates” society's economic and social engine, while protecting and restoring the natural environment.
