Race Reflection Three: The Implicit Association Test-Exploring Our Racial Attitudes
Directions Please read these directions before attempting to complete this assignment. This is the second assignment to be included in your reflection journal. It should be typed in a 12 point font, 1" margins, double spaced and no more than 2 pages. Do not create a title page for this reflection. Instead create a running header with the following: your name and the number of the reflection. Be sure to also include a page numbers. Remember: Your grade on this reflection journal is based on whether you answer the questions and/or prompts accurately and completely, and whether (and how) you incorporate course materials (readings, lectures, and discussions) to show the depth of your reflection and the mastery of course content.
The Activity:
How do our implicit biases impact our views of other racial groups and our social
interactions with them? This reflection activity is designed for you to answer the
aforementioned and explore your own implicit biases through completing the Race and Skin
Tone Implicit Association Test through Harvard University. You will need to go to:
https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html and agree to take a test.
Directions for Completing the Test
After you agree to take the test, choose the RACE IAT and click next to the green check
mark to begin. Complete the test and be sure to take note of your results. Repeat the same
steps for completing the SKIN TONE IAT. Then using the following link:
http://www.apa.org/monitor/2008/07-08/psychometric.aspx read about criticisms of the
IAT test.
Guidelines for Written Reflection
1. What were your results on both tests? Were you surprised by these results? Why or
Why not?
2. Do you believe your results were accurate? Why or why not?
3. Regardless of the IAT, do you think that you have hidden racial biases? What is your
evidence?
4. In your opinion, how common are hidden racial biases, and how important are they
compared with other racial biases?
