A study from Cornell University shows that "sitting for more than 1 hour has been shown to induce biochemical changes in the lipoprotein lipase activity". Lipoprotein is an enzyme involved in fat metabolism and in glucose metabolism. This process happens in all people whether you're fit, overweight or naturally skinny. These problems can be fixed by standing up for activities for about 30 minutes for every hour sitting. However, while standing for a long periods of time is more tiring than sitting, it can still cause health issues like varicose veins (the deformation of veins) and painful back problems. The average American spends 9-3 hours sitting a day. Now for students you can image how much higher it would be for us students because most of us have 3-4 classes a day that are about an hour each. From the previous information it is obvious that both standing and sitting for a prolonged periods of time is harmful. How can this be fixed to help students all over? Well there is a solution. Standing decks. Not only would they be more cost efficient because more students can use a standing desk opposed to a normal desk. The area of the standing desk will also be bigger than a normal desk because more students will be using it. Now you're probably thinking "I don't want to stand at a desk while in class" well the answer is it won't just be all standing desk, but a fair share of both amounts. That way the idea isn't enforced on to the student body and they get the right to choose. The effects of using standing desks in class is extremely beneficial for the success of students. Standing up allows blood to flow easily to the brain which promotes brain activity to occur and faster. It was said in a study that standing while preforming not only improves memory, but also improves test scores. I believe having the option for standing desks would be beneficial to all students and allow us to perform as best we can.
