Strength of materials

MET 2120

Lab 4

Meshal Al-Khalil

· Introduction

in this lab we learned how to determine the stress and strain of a specific material,

we tested our material to fin out its properties ( stress, breaking point ), we examine different materials to see what best fits with our design.

· Calculations

The data was taken from the force reading device of the Universal test machine to calculate stress.

· Discussion and equations

I calculated the deformation by subtracting the material under pull force from the original length. (3.02in)

The rest was recorded from the test machine

· Conclusion

I can conclude that this experiment helped us gain more knowledge about strength of materials, it was interesting to learn that the material goes through different stages before it breaks. I think this research on different materials and finding their breaking point is very important an engineer. Choosing a material that cant withstand the load we put on it can cause a catastrophic failure to our project.
