Paper II

Assignment: In this paper we will examine how cultural constructs influence our attitudes toward gender, sexual orientation, race or age. To add further complexity, we will attempt to construct an argument from the lens of a gender, sexual orientation, race or age that is not our own. Therefore, if you are male, you may choose to address an issue that is either topical or of concern to those of the female gender; if straight, an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) issue or vice versa, and in that you identify with a particular race, an issue that affects those of a different race. In that you are in your late teens, you may choose an issue that influences individuals over fifty years of age. You are not asked to assume the identity of the person and write as if you were that gender, sexual orientation, race or age, but to understand the issue, as much as possible, from the other’s perspective.

Sources: There has been extensive discourse on all these issues that is bold, enlivening, controversial, radical, and superficial as well as profound. I want you to explore anthologies, monographs (a learned treatise on a small area of learning), nonfiction essays and perhaps even novels that address your topic. Therefore, you will have at least three (3) print books listed as sources on your Works Cited page. Totally, you should accrue six (6) sources, and these can come from any media. Obviously you are not limited to six sources.

Evaluative Criteria:

1. Do you present a clearly-defined thesis?

2. Are the topic sentences subordinate, yet related to the thesis?

3. Does the evidence in the paragraphs relate to the topic sentences?

4. Is the paper free of language errors?

5. Are your Works Cited page and in-text documentation in the correct format?

Length: Four to five double-spaced typewritten pages.
