First solution option ( the highest score and chose it to be the best solution )

The first option involves designing a system to deliver the reclaimed wastewater from the WWTP across the Portneuf River and to the reservoir on the opposite side. The reservoir will be located between the WWTP and the Airport.

One of the pipes is designed to deliver water from the reservoir down to the Simplot at the lower end, by crossing the interstate I-86, and another pipe delivers the treated water from the reservoir to Pocatello regional Airport. The ground elevation at the WWTP is 4394 ft. above sea level and the reservoirs elevation is 4419ft above the sea level.

Driving the water from a lower elevation at the WWTP to a higher elevation at the reservoir point leads to reduction in pressures along the water line. Introducing a pump to recover the loss in pressure can compensate for this pressure loss. The Airport is also located at a higher elevation of 4448 ft. hence this calls for installation of a pumping station to generate the required pressure for flow of water from the reservoir to the Airport.

On the other hand the Simplot is located at an elevation of 4430ft. above sea level requiring the pumping of water from the reservoir to the factory. The reservoir is to be built with the help of two gravel pits located in between the WWTP and the Airport. The main advantage here is that the gravel pits used to build the reservoirs will eventually be transformed into dumping sites for the excavated earth from the reservoir. This will result in savings in monetary terms on costs for delivering the dirt to a dumping site distant from the reservoir. One more gravel pit is located by the airport and would be used to build a reservoir by the Airport for future purposes. Emergency pipes are to be stationed in between the WWTP and Portneuf River

Second option

This case involves the delivery of reclaimed water from the WWTP to the reservoir. The reservoir will be located by the WWTP area, and there is a gravel pit available that can be used in building the reservoir. From the WWTP there will be emergency pipes that will transmit the reclaimed water into the Portneuf River in the result of emergency cases.

The difference in elevation between the WWTP and the Airport location results in the need for a pumping station by the reservoir to overcome the hydraulic head difference. After crossing the Portneuf River the water line meets a junction where it branches into two directions. One of them delivers the reclaimed water to Simplot by crossing Interstate I-86 and the other distributes the reclaimed water to the Airport. The location of a gravel pit close to the Airport is strategic for the construction of a reservoir for future purposes.

The third option

third option that our team came up with is to start from Wastewater Treatment Plant with two pipes. One pipe will go to the Portneuf River and will be used for emergency cases. The second pipe will cross the Portneuf River and go to the reservoir which is located between the WWTP and the Airport. The distance from the WWTP to the reservoir’s location is approximately 0.9 miles. A pumping station will be placed near to the Wastewater Treatment Plant in order to overcome the head needed to deliver the reclaimed water to the reservoir which is located at a higher elevation than the WWTP.

After the reclaimed water is delivered to the reservoir, we will send it to Simplot, the Airport and the gravel pit that is near the Airport. We will deliver the reclaimed wastewater to Simplot by piping the water across Interstate 86 as shown in the Figure zz. However, crossing the interstate is not an easy feat and it will cost a significant amount of money.

To deliver the reclaimed water to the airport and the nearby gravel pit, we will pipe the water parallel to Interstate 86 along University Boulevard. The distance is about 3 miles.

Fourth option

fourth option that our team came up with is to start from Wastewater Treatment Plant with two pipes. The first pipe will go to the Portneuf River and will be used for emergency cases. The second pipe will cross the Portneuf River and branch off into two directions. The first branch will deliver the reclaimed wastewater to Simplot and the second branch will transfer the water to the Airport and the gravel pit near the Airport. A pumping station will be placed near to the Wastewater Treatment Plant in order to overcome the head needed to deliver the reclaimed water to both locations which are located at higher elevations than the WWTP. Figure zz below shows the location of the components of option 4.

Again, in order to deliver the treated wastewater to Simplot, Interstate 86 has to be crossed which is both expensive and difficult. Instead of including a reservoir in this option, our team came up with the idea to use perforated pipes. The purpose of using perforated pipes is to discharge the reclaimed water into the ground without needing to build a new reservoir. The discharged water can be used for aquifer recharge. A diagram of a perforated pipe is shown below in Figure zz.

Fifth option

fifth option is about sending the reclaimed water from the WWTP across the Portneuf River and I-86 to a highly elevated storage tank by Simplot. The large difference in elevation requires a pumping station located at the WWTP. Then, the water will be piped from the storage tank back across I-86 to a reservoir that will be built near to the WWTP. The reservoir by WWTP is to be built with the help of an already existing gravel pit. Also, a pipe will be sent from the storage tank to the Airport and the nearby gravel pit.

Sixth option

sixth option is about using the river as a way to deliver the water. So basically we will send the reclaimed water through a pipe from WWTP to the Portneuf River where it will travel to a certain location near to the Airport. At that end, we will have a pumping station to collect the water from the river. From the pumping station we will pump the water directly across I-86 to Simplot. From the same pumping station, another pipe will be sent towards the Airport and to the nearby gravel pit that will act as a small reservoir. This idea might work for short term but not for long term. The water might lose the city’s water right after going into the Portneuf River.
