art
Write an at least one-page (10-12pt) reaction, description, and analysis of a work of art or the work of an artist in the Nashville area. For the extra credit, you will need to go to a gallery to see the work in person. With the exception of the TODD Gallery in this building, you should include some evidence of your visit. A ticket stub, brochure or a photo of yourself at the gallery/museum will work. You will find a single piece of art or, a show of an artist’s work and write the following:
1.Describe what you see. Is it sculpture? Paintings? Video? How big is the work? What kind of imagery is the artist using? Is it abstract? Does it tell a story?...
2.What is your reaction to the work? Why were you drawn to it? Do you like it? Why? What else does it remind you of?
3.Using the elements and principles of art (you must mention AT LEAST three terms in your essay), do a short formal analysis of the work. A formal analysis does NOT concentrate on subject matter, function, culture, etc., but it may consider them when they apply to decisions about formal element, things like color, line, size, etc. A clear, well-written formal analysis will contain three things: it will name the formal elements discussed, it will describe the use of the formal elements, and it will discuss the effects of that use of said formal element.
4.Also include an image of the work. If you do not take a photo in person, you can usually find it online. You can also ask the museum/gallery if they have a pamphlet containing an image of the artist’s work.
