Choose one of the following topics and write a paper of at least three pages.
1. What is your understanding and assessment of the images and roles of women in Sundiata? For specific focus, pay attention to the following: Sassouma Béréte, Nana Triban, Sogolon, Massiran (the sister of the King of Mema, the last place of exile of Sundiata). You may include other women of your choice. How do these images and roles conform to or diverge from what you know (or thought you knew) about women in Africa?
2. Are there any lessons that African Americans can draw from Sundiata? If so, identify and discuss some of these lessons. If not, state the reasons for your argument.
3. Of what value, in your opinion, is Sundiata to people of all racial/ethnic background?
4. Using Call and Response and notes on the Oral Tradition in “Handouts” and whatever other resource you choose, compare the African epic to the Negro spiritual.
