1,what is culture?

The members of a culture share clearly identifiable traits, paterns of behavior, worldviews, systems of social organizations, and similar value systems. Moreover,a culture is not static, unchangin

-g,or even homogeneous.and Culture is universal, multifaceted, intricate. It permeates all aspects of human society. Cultures are dynamic, marked by changes in response to new technology.

(DeCapua & Wintergerst, 2004).

Culture is a complex concept that anthropologists and sociologists have defined in a variety of ways, Prior to the late 1950s,it was typically defined in terms of patterns of behavior and customs. Geertz defines culture as ‘an historically transmitte

-d pattern of meanings employed in symbols,a system of inherite

-d conceptions expressed in symbolic form by means of which men communicate ,perpetuate and develop their knowledge about and attitudes towards life. And LeVine, culture is ‘a shared organization of ideas that includes the intellectual, moral, and aesthetic standards prevalent in a community and the meanings of communication actions. (Bennett, C., 2002)

All conceptions of culture imply a distinction between the cultural and natural. Cultivation transforms the natural, in a social sense, just as agriculture. And culture is in us and all around us, just as is the air we breathe. It is personal, familial,

Communal, institutional, societal, and global in its scope and dist-

Ribution. (Erickson.2003.)

2, In what ways does culture impact student’s learning and behavior?

Virtually all of us would agree that each student should be provided an equal opportunity to learn.Multicultural teaching goes beyond this goal to focus on principles of social justice ,

Compassion for humanity, and social responsibility.which are also rooted in the deep cultural values of our democratic society, even though they are not yet a social reality. Multicultural teachers seek to foster feelings of compassion, fair-minded, critical thinking, and a spirit of social responsibility and participation within themselves and their students. They are caring advocates for students from all cultural, racial, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds (Bennet, C., 2002).

Culture affect personality, motivation, and attitudes. They focus is on the influence of the individual speaker’s personality inconju-

Nction with psychocultural variations in perception, attitudes, and

Motivation. With the goal of understanding the relationship between culture and individual behavior.(DeCapua & Wintergerst, 2004).

Student Achievement. A study by Steele & Aronson (1995) show that these expectations – often based on unconscious, or unintentional racial assumptions – can have a very real impact on student achievement. (Alwater, 2008).

Summary: according my observations, I think that I and my partner have different Cultural Element. About learning and behavior,we found that my parents always take care for us when we was mealtimes, and after finish class, the first thing when we went home was do homework.

After that,we found that the different between china family and American family’s education pattern is different. For example, when children make mistake, In American family could forgive their child, but in China ‘s family the parents could scold their child. Secondly,American parents will listen to the voices of children, Chinese parents will tell their children that they are very busy. In American Parents through the exchange of the emotions with their child,When a child will play, parents will take time to play together with their child.but in china In order to learn to lay the foundation of children’s study . Parents accompany their children to learn more, check the child jobs. Parents doing housework issues raised child will say, "Now I'm busy".

So I consider that The United States is the education power, also strong education, attaches great importance to the quality education of students . we have different thinking about our behavior.

What reflections do you have about culture and the levels of literacy in students’ homes?

Culture is our daily life. according my observation, I and partner have different religious. So we have the opposite idea about many field. About the relationship and social culture. After that, the levels of literacy for us ,my partner told me that US is a open society. The society's openness urges the American college to abandon old educational thoughts which European traditional universities stick to, adopt the open policy to absorb all advatanges from other countries and establishs a diverse and open education control system which emphasizes on the actual effect. We discuss this problem ,and then I think that China's elementary education aims is build the foundations of education with more study and less thought; while US's education aims to bulid such an education to raise the creativity with less study and more think. so I think understand culture can improve our communication. We should pay more attention to raise our self-confidence,independence,spirit of supporting oneself when we meet other culture ‘s students.

Describe three methods that you as a future teacher would use to learn more about your students’ cultures.

In the future , if I will become the teacher in elementary school, I think that Teaching is the greatest profession under the sun. As teachers, we must not only have a wide range of knowledge, but also have comprehensive skills and positive attitudes. So when I face the different culture students in my class, I would like to let students have more personal time study first, and then let them discuss the problem.and activity express their opinion. And I like to be a listener and to make students become friends would like to be a good way to integrate the whole class like a big family regardless of culture differences. In other ways, I will let every students introduce their names, because different name has different story, this can promote our study different culture student. I will pay attention to the student’s background.Trying to use the students’ backgrounds as a starting point in the curriculum.because it is very important.

Finally, Delpit (1995) recommends an alternative approach---to teach second—culture skills explicitly and carefully but without moralizing. This approach takes a critical and strategic view of multiculturalism, for survival reasons (Erickson, F., 2003). After learning the theory, teacher can design a activity when we meet different culture. And make students join the activity to feel different culture and make friends with different culture. I believe the students will learn best when they are happy. These are my personal ideas. Maybe they are correct in a way, while they are not enough for us. So I will devote more diligence to my work and get more experience from teaching.

5. Once you learn about your students’ culture, how would you adjust your teaching to accommodate what you’ve learned?

Once I learn about my student’s culture ,I think that I will adjust my curriculum, and pedagogy to best meet the needs of my students. To set up a new knowledge points to make the class full of active. Generally speaking, learning is a process, and teachers are facilitators of that process. Teachers can provide methods and let students to understand content and knowledge.

Second,to combine with the actual situation of mathematics and students, scientific and reasonable adjustment of teaching plan. And as a teacher, we should reasonably combine the students' knowledge and living environment.

Third begin with a strange phenomenon of everyday life.As far as possible each class as a teacher for the behind the scenes director, students is the activities of the protagonist's life drama to deal with, Such a teacher's "teaching" and "learning" of the students are full of unlimited fun. They can share and discuss. with the situation of culture, students can learn more detail of the culture and knowledge and make friends in the class.

6. What questions do you have about teaching in California with diverse populations of students?

In California with diverse populations of students, when I meet naughty students. What can I do ? And when I meet the students, their English is not very fluent . How to teach them? Language is also very important.
