Overview

For the hypotheses tested in this study, the dependent variable was the dollars spent on hot food items (quantitative, ratio scale). The independent variable was sex (qualitative, nominal scale). The research question for the study was:

RQ: Are there differences in daily hot food revenue attributable to the sex of the customer?

The hypotheses for the study were:

HO: There is no difference in daily hot food revenue attributable to sex.

HA: There is no difference in daily hot food revenue attributable to sex.

Statistical Techniques and Software Applied in Study

A two independent sample t-test was used to test the hypotheses. MegaStat and Microsoft Excel 2011 for Mac were used to perform data analysis and statistical testing. Comment by Ross DePinto: The appropriate statistical tool to test the hypothesis based on the research question is determined. Comment by Ross DePinto: This is included as an audit trail if the test results need to be validated.

Results of Statistical Inference Testing

The t-test results are presented in Table E1 (Appendix E) with observed results of t(123) = 21.6 and p < .0001. Based on these findings, the null hypotheses was rejected at a 95% confidence level. The results indicated there was a statistically significant difference in monthly sales of hot food items attributable to sex, where men (M = 1,437.42, SD = 177.84, N = 66), purchased more hot food items than women (M = 832.91, SD = 140.91, N = 66).
