How can waste be made useful?

Introduction:

The goal of this investigation was to develop a process that could take a combination of various reagents in order to form precipitates via a chemical reaction. In this particular case the solids that were produced were as follows: Barium Sulfate (BaSO4), Zinc Hydroxide (Zn(OH)2),Aluminum Hydroxide (Al(OH)3), and Sodium Chloride (NaCl). One of the main objectives for this lab was to get better acquainted with the solubility rules for ionic compounds. The solubility rules establish which compounds are soluble in an aqueous solution, or in other words it establishes which compounds will dissolve in water. The precipitates that form are insoluble in aqueous solution which is why the solid forms. In order to complete this lab the knowledge of these rules were used to determine which reagents would combine to form a precipitate (solid). The selected chemicals were then mixed with specific acids and bases in order to create solids from liquids.

Materials:

· 1- Graduated cylinder                 

· 8- 15 ml test-tubes                   

· 1- Bunsen gas burner              

· 1- Test-tube holder     

· 1- Square of wire gauze               

· 1- Evaporation disk   

· 1- Centrifuge              

· 1- Match

· Chemicals: BaCl2(aq),H2SO4(aq), Mn(NO3)2(aq),NaOH(aq), Zn(NO3)2(aq), HCl(aq)

Procedure :

The chemicals assigned in this lab were BaCl2(aq),H2SO4(aq), Mn(NO3)2(aq),NaOH(aq), Zn(NO3)2(aq), and HCl(aq).As seen above in the materials list there were various tools used from the tool drawer. The first step was to use the test tubes and test tube rack in order to hold the reagents. As determined by the solubility rules chemicals were then mixed into a plastic test tube. The tubes were labeled one through four and observations were made. Test tube number one contained BaCl2(aq) combined with H2SO4(aq). The second test tube was Zn(NO3)2(aq) combined with NaOH(aq). The third test tube was Mn(NO3)2(aq) combined with NaOH(aq). The fourth test tubed combined NaOH(aq) with HCl (aq). The precipitations were then formed by one of the two separation techniques. NaOH(aq) and HCl (aq) required the evaporation separation technique since water had formed. The other three combinations were separated by placing the plastic test tubes in a centrifuge. After the separation method was used the results were observed.
