Online Discussion:
Content analysis Model
*
Based on Gunawardena, Lowe & Anderson (1997) Online forum: a student-centered learning environment where participants can share knowledge, discuss ideas and contribute to each others’ understandings of important issues. Implicit in this are the concept of collaborative learning in a community of learners, a perception of learning as a social activity, and a constructivist. approach to learning. Also very relevant is Moore’s Three Types of Interaction
5 phase model
Shows how knowledge construction moves through 5 levels
from knowledge sharing to knowledge building
*
Aim = Knowledge construction NOT knowledge reproduction. Big question: How far do posts reflect knowledge construction, in depth inquiry rather than superficial comments. What is going on in the forum – deep or surface learning?
Phase 1
- Sharing and
comparing
information
- Statements, observations
*
Two columns; Process variables (how learners negotiate and interact) + product variables (content and outcomes of learner interactions)
Phase 2
Discovery
&
Exploration
- Questions
- clarification,
- elaboration
*
Discovering different views and perspectives leading to self-directed inquiry to seek clarification and elaboration.
Phase 3
- Negotiation of meaning
- co-construction of knowledge
- Joint meaning making
- Shared understanding
*
, High form of collaborative learning - identifying areas of agreement and disagreement, coming to a shared understanding – or accommodation
Phase 4
- Testing ideas
- Revising ideas
- Testing & revising against personal knowledge
*
Personal knowledge would include theoretical knowledge + lived experience. These would be cited in evidence +use of examples
and investigation of alternative viewpoints
Phase 5
- Awareness of new knowledge
- Metacognitive statements
- reflections,
- summarizing agreement
*
Statements reflecting new knowledge construction, reflections on process of co-construction and a synthesis of areas of agreement and disagreement.
NB. The on-line forum functions best as a constructivist student-centered learning environment enabling collaboration, sharing of ideas, group discussion, and the development of a community of learners
