INTERVIEWING AN EXPERT ON YOUR TOPIC

PURPOSE: The overall purpose of the interview is to incorporate the interview findings into your research paper.
GOAL: The goal of the interview is to learn about the application and impact of the technology from an expert in the field with first hand experience of the technology.

Textbook Reading: p. 470 (Personal Communication)

For the analysis paper, you are required to interview an expert in the field.  Although you may conduct the interview through email, an in person, or even over the phone, a face to face interview is best.  You may not interview a relative. The information from the interview will be incorporated into your research paper to support your opinion that this technology has somehow revolutionized the field.

You must interview an expert in the field you are researching.  Expertise comes in all forms: education, experience, time, knowledge, certification, etc.  Depending on your topic and the direction you would like to head in your research, the expert varies. 

You must interview an expert who is knowledge about your specific subject.  Just because they are in the field is not enough; they may not have expertise with the particular subject you are researching.

Let’s think back to the topic proposal example.  The student, Samantha, who proposed to write about the use of IPad’s in restaurants.  As a restaurant server, she could interview a fellow employee, a customer, or even her own manager.  Even if these people had direct experience of IPad’s in a restaurant, their opinions do not make them experts.  Samantha's decision to interview the developer of the software or the general manager of a restaurant using IPad’s are better choices, since these two people are experts in the field.  The software developer has knowledge of the program, demand, and needs of the technology.  The general restaurant manager has direct experience with the technology and the feedback.

Let’s look at another new example.  Ian plans to become a labor and delivery nurse and is researching the positives of cord blood banking and donation.  Ian could interview a current labor and delivery nurse who knows about the positives of banking and donation.  But more likely than not, this is not the nurse’s area of expertise.  Ian would benefit more by contacting a representative at a cord blood bank.  The nurse he first considered interviewing could probably help him with finding a contact person.  Better yet, Ian could interview both the nurse and the contact person with the cord blood bank.

You will incorporate the findings from your interview into the content of your paper, just as you would with any other source. 

INTERVIEWING TIPS

  • Arranging an interview takes time, so begin to search for an expert to interview while writing your research report.

  • The first step in interviewing a person is to make an appointment at their convenience. It is a good idea to not only call to arrange this interview, but also to write a letter explaining who you are and why you would like to interview the person.

  • Be sure you can provide information on the interviewee’s qualifications and background in his/her area.

  • Before the interview, write a set of questions that are based on your research. It is also a good idea, if possible, to send the list of questions to your interviewee ahead of time. This allows him/her to be better prepared for the interview and makes the best use of both of your times. Use open-ended questions, questions that cannot be answered with one or two words. Open-ended questions start with “why”, “how is it...”, “what is it like....” Avoid “who”, “what”, “when”, “where” questions. Close-ended questions only give limited information. Open-ended questions cause the interviewee to think and explain fully.

  • You should not write your interview questions or conduct the interview until you have completed your background research. Having intelligent questions based on data and research will give you the best interview.

THE INTERVIEW

  • Be sure to get factual information, not just opinions.

  • In addition to the questions you wrote down, you should ask additional questions to get the expert to explain his/her answers more fully.

  • Take full notes during the interview. It is a good idea to use a tape recorder, but you must obtain permission from the interviewee ahead of time.

  • Interviews should take at least 20 minutes, but should not exceed an hour unless you arrange it beforehand.

  • Once you have completed the interview, you should send a written thank you note.  You may even want to send a copy of your final research paper.

Familiarize yourself with the Analysis Essay Guidelines before beginning this assignment

Just as you did for the argument essay, you will write and submit a proposal for the Analysis Paper. As a reminder, proposals are used in business, publishing, and other "real world" arenas. Preparing the proposal allows you to clarify and refine your approach to the topic and to focus your direction of the paper.  Your proposal needs to sell you paper - it needs to interest your audience, demonstrate the direction you plan to take, and validate the thesis through a presentation of the research strategies and types of sources you found.

For the purposes of this class, proposal will include the following elements: major field of study/post college career plans, technology in the field/effects of the technology, statement of purpose, guiding questions, working thesis, working title, and beginning research.

The topic selection proposal assignment for the research paper differs from the proposal submitted for the argument paper.  Carefully read the criteria below (and review the student example) and complete the assignment using the proper format. 

CRITERIA

  • MAJOR FIELD OF STUDY/POST COLLEGE CAREER PLANS:
    Short explanation of your field of study and college plan. Short description of your career plans after finishing college.

  • TECHNOLOGY IN THE FIELD/EFFECTS OF THE TECHNOLOGY:
    Briefly describe one specific technology affecting your particular field. Briefly explain how this technology has revolutionized the profession.

  • STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
    Tell us why you are particularly able, interested, or qualified to write this paper. Include any special relationship or connection your have with this topic. ( Please do not choose a topic with which you are completely unfamiliar.)

  • GUIDING QUESTION:
    What exactly are you investigating? In one sentence, summarize the essence of the paper in the form of a question .

  • WORKING THESIS:
    In a single sentence, try to capture the essence of what you expect your paper to explore. This is a challenge and can feel frustrating for those of us who either like to write at greater length or those who prefer to write without a “destination” in order to find out what we think by writing about a topic. Remember that you won’t be held to this, but see it as a stepping stone to a more complete decision as to your topic.   *The thesis is not in question form. 
    (Hint: The technologyhas revolutionized the fieldin these ways.  Example: Digital menu displays revolutionized the restaurant industry by enabling guests to better visualize menu items, reduce staff costs, and vastly boost customer awareness, loyalty, and retention.)

  • WORKING TITLE: 
    Short, clear and sweet, or intriguing two-part title to give us an opening to jump into your paper . (Topic: Opinion)

  • PRELIMINARY RESEARCH:
    Describe the beginnings of your research.  At this point you should have perused many scholarly articles to assist you in developing your argument.  List the articles you have found that will assist you in supporting your thesis, as well as the articles that you can include in the counterargument.  Futhermore, explain what you hope to accomplish with these articles.  Finally, outline whom you have contacted to interview for the paper and the format in which the interview will take place, and what you hope to gain from this interview.

NOTES:

  • The more descriptive you are, the less questions (and concerns) I will have regarding your proposal, which means you will receive your grade quickly, and without the request of a resubmission.

  • Submit your best work for a grade.  I will ONLY grade your first submission, regardless of requests for subsequent submissions. Do not expect to submit your assignment, receive feedback, make changes, and receive a new grade.  Ask questions first (visit the Help! Discussion forum or email me).

  • I cannot stress this enough: please follow the format outlined in the assignment. 

  • Feedback, if applicable, will be include with your grade.
