Conflicting Viewpoints Essay
I decided to choose the topic "Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?"
The Con:
· The push for school uniforms is driven by commercial interests rather than educational ones.
· School uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by imposing an extra expense on families.
· Focusing on uniforms takes attention away from finding genuine solutions to problems in education.
I mainly chose this topic because for most of my schooling I attended a school that had a uniform. After reading both sides of the argument I decided that I am in favor of students wearing uniforms. My reasoning for choosing this side is because I know both sides of this coin so to speak. For a long time, I was a child with military parents, and often times this meant that I was able to get name brand clothing and the newest styles. However, later on in my education, after my parents retired from the military, the budget was tighter and that meant shopping on a smaller budget. I noticed as I got older I began focusing more on “How” I should dress in school rather than what I should be learning. It became a daily stress for me to find an outfit that was going to be fashionable. Now looking back, I can see why uniforms are useful and can take that pressure off kids and give them more room to express themselves in more creative productive ways. People will change their mind who agree with these thoughts and who actually do face all these.
