Summary

SUMMARY: A brief re-statement of a text. A summary captures the 'gist' of the original text to

which it refers, in a writing that is shortened, but that maintains the fundamental meaning of

the original piece, tt is important to remember that a Summary is more than a simple retelling

of main ideas; it should indicate relationships among ideas and tie them together in coherent

paragraphs

For paper #1, you will produce a Standard Summary of Kerry Howley's essay "Who Owns Your

Body Parts" - found on pages 290-302 of your text, Writing in the Disciplines.lmagine that the Summary you write is directed to an audience of first-year college students who have not yet

read the essay. The final draft of your Summary shall be 2 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12 pt.
