MEM333 Group Project 1 Due: February 10, 2016 This Group Project is to be completed by each Study Group. Project Assignment: A company needs an investigative report of an incident that was caused by mechanical failure (e.g. caused by either plastic yielding, or by fracture, or by fatigue crack growth, or by a combination of the above.) The company hears that Drexel MEM students are good engineers and gives your group a contract to write the report. The company says you can select any incident of such failure/disaster to write. It needs the report in two weeks. Hint: There are many such cases of engineering failure or disaster reported in the news
media, technical reports, books, technical journals, and/or on the internet. Deliverable: The deliverable is a project report in Microsoft Word format due on February 10. The project report should consist of at least these sections: (I) Title page
It shows the title of the project.
It also lists the names of the group members, with the wordings "( n percent)" next to
each name to indicate that student has contributed n percent to this project. Adding all
group members' contributions should sum up to 100 percent. (II) Executive Summary
A half-page summary for the busy CEO and VP of the company. (III) Introduction (IV) The Incident (Detail descriptions of the what, the when, the where, the consequences,
and the aftermath. Show pictures and graphics as needed.) (V) Engineering Analysis of the Incident (Present an engineering analysis of how and why
it happened the way it happened. Include sketches and equations as needed.) (VI) Concluding Remarks (VII) References

MEM333 Group Project 2 Due: March 14, 2016 This Group Project is to be completed by each Study Group. Project Assignment: Write an Engineering Consultant Report To gain professional experience and to earn money, your Study Group takes a contract job as engineering consultant for a company. This company is in the High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe business. It is interested to see whether HDPE pipes can replace metallic pipes in all engineering applications. It wants to understand how metallic pipes fail in field applications. It asks you to help it to understand the following case in which an investigative report from The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says in its executive summary that: " On November 1, 2007, at 10:35:02 a.m. central daylight time, a 12-inch-diameter pipeline segment operated by Dixie Pipeline Company was transporting liquid propane at about 1,405 pounds per square inch, gauge, when it ruptured in a rural area near Carmichael, Mississippi. The resulting gas cloud expanded over nearby homes and ignited, creating a large fireball that was heard and seen from miles away. About 10,253 barrels (430,626 gallons) of propane were released. As a result of the ensuing fire, two people were killed and seven people sustained minor injuries. Four houses were destroyed, and several others were damaged. About 71.4 acres of grassland and woodland were burned. Dixie Pipeline Company reported that property damages resulting from the accident, including the loss of product, were $3,377,247." pipeline failure case. (B) Tell the company whether to replace the steel pipe with HDPE pipe is a good idea for
the future. Will using HDPE pipe likely prevent similar failure to happen again, or will it make things worse? If your answer is "We do not know. It depends", specify the factors that it depends on. Present engineering analysis to support your point.
