Paper: Choice and Rationale

I will take on the topic of “Challenges in Managing Virtual Projects” as the marketplace is becoming more global and increasingly more technological. The business environment is highly represented in a virtual environment that is evolving at record speeds for large and small companies. The Internet, social media platforms, smart phones and other technology has created a progressive environment to manage virtual projects. There are several software programs that have made collaboration within teams more streamline and easier to communicate from all over the world. There are definitely some positives to virtual work, however challenges exist.

There are also some challenges in managing virtual projects that must be addressed or at least identified so that they don’t delay the project. Teams must be able to operate in a globalized environment that is a continuous revolution of information and change. Bringing a team together to make the connection and work in a flexible structure with complex constraints can be a challenge. There are cultural, geographic and language challenges when managing virtual projects. In addition, the project manager must account for religious and governmental standards.

For the past 7 years I have worked from home in a few different roles, and they all included some project work or working with a team. The survival of many virtual projects will rely on the ability of the project team to quickly modify the structure, direction and team norms in order to keep up with the changing environment. The ever changing way of doing business, speed of technology and variety of communication modes has created a whole new arena for virtual projects. It is essential to address those challenges in order continuously improve.
